Chapter 11 - THE DEAD MAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE

Charles Crowe had built the company Vanessa inherited.
He had also built everything underneath it.
Bribes.
Smuggling routes.
Blackmail.
Political favors.
Vanessa had not transformed her father’s company into a criminal network.
She had simply inherited one.
“Why fake his death?” I asked.
Daniel answered.
“Because investigators were closing in.”
“So Vanessa became the public face.”
“And the shield.”
Rebecca looked shaken.
“My sister spent twelve years protecting him.”
Daniel nodded.
“Until recently.”
“What changed?”
“You.”
He looked at me.
I laughed nervously.
“I’m an auditor.”
“You found accounting irregularities everyone else missed.”
“Because they weren’t subtle.”
“They were subtle enough for federal investigators to miss for seven years.”
That shut me up.
Daniel opened the hard drive.
The files revealed something bigger than I expected.
Vanessa had recently started moving money away from her father.
Secretly.
She was preparing to betray Charles.
That explained why the organization was becoming unstable.
Father against daughter.
Vincent against Adrian.
Everyone trying to control the same network.
“And Ethan?” I asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“Charles wants him.”
Rebecca immediately said:
“No.”
“Why?”
“Michael was Charles’s chosen successor.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Before Michael discovered what Charles was doing.”
That changed everything.
Charles Crowe had once planned to hand his empire to Adrian’s brother.
Michael rejected him.
Then Michael died.
Now Ethan was Michael’s son.
A symbolic heir.
A useful puppet.
And eighteen years old.
Young enough to manipulate.
Adrian looked toward him.
Ethan folded his arms.
“I’m not joining anybody’s empire.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s the smartest thing you’ve said all week.”
“Thanks, Mom.”
“I’m twelve years older than you.”
“Still sounded like Mom.”
Adrian smiled.
The tension broke for three seconds.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
One message.
CHARLES CROWЕ REQUESTS A MEETING.
Location:
Union Station.
Noon.
Tomorrow.
Adrian said:
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“We need him exposed.”
“We already have evidence.”
“Not enough to connect him directly to Michael’s death.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
I understood.
She wanted justice.
Not revenge.
Proof.
Then I noticed an attachment beneath the message.
A photograph.
My mother.
Standing beside Charles Crowe twenty-eight years earlier.
My breath stopped.
“Why is my mother in this?”
Rebecca stared at it.
“Oh, Claire.”
“What?”
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Your mother didn’t meet me in college.”
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“She worked for Charles Crowe.”
May you like
And according to Rebecca…
My mother had once been the most trusted accountant in his entire organization.
