Chapter 7 - MY HUSBAND’S ACCIDENT WAS MURDER

Grief changes shape when you learn it was built by someone else.
For four years, I blamed rain.
Timing.
Myself for not answering Daniel’s calls.
Now I had photographs of his brake lines.
I sat in Suite 904 with Lily asleep in the bedroom and felt rage so clean it almost calmed me.
Rachel sat across from me.
“The photos don’t prove who cut them.”
“I know.”
“But they prove someone knew.”
“Yes.”
One image included metadata.
Taken in the hotel parking garage.
Three hours before Daniel died.
Security camera export records showed the garage footage from that night had been deleted manually.
User authorization:
VL-ADMIN.
Victor Lang.
I closed my eyes.
Daniel’s best friend.
Lily’s Uncle Victor.
The man who carried his coffin.
No.
Not yet.
Evidence first.
Emotion later.
Daniel had taught me that too.
Police issued alerts.
Victor’s car was found at Midway Airport.
No Victor.
No flight under his name.
Rachel traced corporate jet access.
One charter left at 5:55 a.m.
Destination Indianapolis.
Passenger:
Victor Lang.
Another name:
Margaret Ellison.
Robert’s wife.
Interesting.
Why together?
Then Lupita called.
“I’m sorry to bother you.”
“You’re not.”
“There’s a man asking staff about you.”
“Police?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“He says his name is Samuel Reed.”
That name meant nothing.
“He says he knew Mr. Vance.”
I went downstairs.
Samuel Reed was seventy-two.
Retired mechanic.
Worked hotel fleet maintenance for twenty-eight years.
He looked at Lily’s roses on the lobby table.
Then at me.
“Daniel said you’d come eventually.”
My heart stopped.
“Why?”
Samuel reached into his coat.
An envelope.
Sealed.
My name in Daniel’s handwriting.
Another message.
Another contingency.
“Why didn’t you give me this four years ago?”
Samuel looked ashamed.
“I was scared.”
“Of Victor?”
“Of Robert.”
That surprised me.
Robert, not Victor.
Samuel explained.
The afternoon Daniel died, he saw Robert near Daniel’s car.
Not cutting brakes.
Removing something from beneath the dashboard.
“What?”
“Tracking device.”
Daniel had installed it himself.
He wanted to know who entered his vehicle.
Samuel found the device later in a trash bin.
Saved it.
Then Robert threatened him.
“If I talked, my grandson would lose his job.”
“So you stayed silent.”
“Yes.”
Honest.
Ugly.
Human.
I opened Daniel’s envelope.
Clara,
If Samuel gives you this, Robert panicked.
Victor may still be salvageable.
I stared.
Salvageable?
Daniel did not believe Victor was the killer.
Then:
Victor is hiding something, but I think he is afraid of Robert, not working above him.
Everything shifted.
Maybe Victor approved Lakeshore because Robert controlled him.
Maybe his disappearance was not escape.
Then Samuel handed me the old tracker.
Data preserved.
Daniel’s car stopped twice before the crash.
First:
Hotel.
Second:
A private warehouse owned by Vance Hospitality.
Then the road where he died.
But there was another vehicle following the entire route.
Registered to Robert Ellison.

And according to GPS, Robert’s car reached the crash site seventeen minutes before police.
Robert had been there when Daniel died.
