Chapter 11 - THE SECRET MARCO KEPT

Emma replayed the video.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each time Thomas said the same thing.

Marco Moretti.

My most trusted man.

The person who carried Emma bleeding into my house.

The person who helped us find every clue.

Rose whispered:

“I knew we shouldn’t trust him.”

I didn’t answer.

Because trust means nothing if you only keep it when convenient.

I called Marco.

“Come to Ohio.”

No details.

He arrived four hours later.

I played the video.

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Grief.

“Play the rest.”

“There is no rest.”

“There has to be.”

Nathan frowned.

“The file ends there.”

Marco shook his head.

“Thomas would never say that without explanation.”

Emma crossed her arms.

“He did.”

Marco looked at her.

“Your father trusted me.”

“Apparently he changed his mind.”

“No.”

“How can you know?”

“Because three days before he died, he called me.”

Everyone went silent.

“What did he say?” Emma asked.

Marco looked at me.

“Adrian found me.”

My hand tightened.

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I hadn’t met you yet.”

Fair.

Marco continued.

“Adrian offered money for Thomas’s location.”

“You refused.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He threatened my mother.”

I had never heard Marco mention his mother.

“She was alive?”

“For another six months.”

“What happened?”

“Cancer.”

Emma’s expression softened despite herself.

Marco looked at the frozen video image of Thomas.

“He told me Adrian would eventually use my connection to him against his children.”

Then Marco remembered something.

“He said if that ever happened, I should look at the timestamp.”

Nathan pulled up the file information.

Created:

2:17 p.m.

Modified:

2:26 p.m.

Nine minutes missing.

“There’s another file,” Nathan said.

Hidden metadata pointed to deleted data on the drive.

Recovery software restored it.

Thomas appeared again.

Same chair.

Same day.

“If Adrian Castellano ever comes looking for my children, it means Salvatore was right about the betrayal. But Adrian is not the one you should fear most.”

Pause.

“Marco Moretti is.”

Emma’s jaw tightened.

Then Thomas continued.

“Because if Marco is still alive, he will put himself between them and danger. And Adrian knows it.”

Marco closed his eyes.

Thomas looked into the camera.

“Gabriel—if you see this, I’m sorry.”

Gabriel.

Marco’s childhood name.

“You were sixteen when I dragged you into this mess. If I die, don’t spend your life repaying me.”

Marco turned away.

The rest of us stayed silent.

Thomas continued:

“Protect my children only if they ask you to.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Do not turn protection into another cage.”

That line hit everyone.

Me most of all.

Then Thomas leaned closer.

“The third ledger is not evidence.”

We all frowned.

“It is bait.”

My pulse changed.

Thomas continued:

“The real evidence is somewhere Adrian can never use without destroying himself.”

The video ended.

Nathan whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Marco stared at the black screen.

“I think I know.”

Adrian’s father, Vincenzo, had created a private family trust in Switzerland.

Adrian inherited it.

If Thomas had hidden evidence inside the trust structure—documents attached to asset ownership, notarized instructions, something legally inseparable—Adrian could not remove it without exposing himself.

We contacted federal investigators.

They began digging.

Twelve hours later, they found it.

A sealed evidentiary escrow connected to Adrian’s trust.

Thomas had deposited authenticated originals through a Swiss attorney years earlier.

Release condition:

Any attempt by Adrian Castellano to transfer controlling assets after Salvatore Castellano’s death.

Adrian had triggered it three weeks ago.

The evidence was already on its way to American prosecutors.

Adrian didn’t know yet.

But Katarina did.

And at 3:40 that morning, she called Emma directly.

“Your father just won,” she said.

Emma stared at the phone.

Then Katarina added:

“And when Adrian realizes it, he is going to kill everyone he thinks helped him lose.”
