Chapter 9 - THE DAUGHTER I NEVER KNEW I HAD

:

Elena was sitting by the fireplace when I entered.

She looked at me.

“What happened?”

I closed the door.

“Is Mia your daughter?”

Her face changed.

Silence.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

My heart cracked.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you had just started sleeping.”

The answer stunned me.

“What?”

“You were finally healing.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I didn't want to take Mia away.”

“You thought I would.”

“No.”

She smiled through tears.

“I thought you'd blame yourself.”

I sat.

“Mia is mine.”

“Yes.”

“My niece.”

“Yes.”

“My family.”

“Yes.”

I stared at her.

“Why did Hannah raise her?”

“Because I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian would have found me.”

I nodded slowly.

Everything connected.

Elena had been the hidden heir.

Mia had been the hidden daughter.

Hannah had protected them both.

The little girl had been placed in my path intentionally.

Not to manipulate me.

To save me.

I looked toward her.

“Does Mia know?”

“No.”

“Will she?”

“When she's old enough.”

I smiled sadly.

“She already knows one thing.”

“What?”

“That I stay.”

Elena started crying.

I reached for her hand.

“She's staying.”

“Gabriel…”

“She is not a secret.”

Elena nodded.

“Neither are you.”

For the first time, my family stopped hiding.

The following year, we held the first family dinner in the old estate.

No security at the table.

No political guests.

No business negotiations.

Just family.

Mia sat beside me.

Elena sat across from us.

Hannah served dinner.

My mother laughed.

Luca told terrible jokes.

Dr. Mason brought dessert.

And for the first time—

I slept before midnight.

I woke at 7:30 a.m.

Mia was sitting on the edge of my bed.

“Mr. Gabriel.”

I opened my eyes.

“Yes?”

“You missed breakfast.”

I laughed.

“Apparently I slept too long.”

She nodded.

“That's okay.”

Then she climbed onto the bed.

“You need rest.”

I looked at her.

“Who taught you that?”

She held up her orange fox.

“He did.”

I laughed.

She hugged me.

Then she whispered:

“I love you.”

The words nearly broke me.

I held her.

May you like

“I love you too.”

And for once, I didn't need to be afraid of what love would cost.
