Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE MAFIA BOSS CHOSE MERCY

The moment Damon saw Victoria pointing a gun toward his mother, something inside him nearly broke.

He wanted to rush forward.

He wanted to tear through every door between them.

Instead, Delaney caught his hand.

"Damon."

He looked at her.

"Don't let them turn you into what they are."

Her voice was steady.

"Your mother needs you alive."

Those words reached him.

He turned toward the detective.

"Tell me what you need."

The operation unfolded quickly.

Police vehicles surrounded the facility.

Emergency exits were secured.

The van carrying Evelyn stopped before reaching the main road.

Through the command radio, Damon heard officers ordering the driver to surrender.

Victoria stepped out.

Her gun remained in her hand.

"Nobody comes closer!" she shouted.

Evelyn stumbled beside her.

Damon could see them from behind the police perimeter.

Victoria spotted him.

Her face twisted.

"You ruined everything!"

Damon kept his hands visible.

"Victoria, let my mother go."

"You were supposed to marry me!"

"Put down the gun."

"My father promised me everything!"

Damon's voice remained controlled.

"Victor lied to you."

Victoria screamed.

"He was going to give us control of the companies!"

Delaney stood several yards behind Damon with an officer.

She saw Evelyn swaying.

Her face was pale.

The older woman looked exhausted.

Then Evelyn noticed Delaney.

For one brief moment, her expression softened.

"My girl," she whispered.

Victoria turned sharply.

"Don't look at her!"

The distraction lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

Evelyn pulled away.

Victoria stumbled.

An officer moved in.

The gun fell.

Within moments, Victoria was restrained.

Damon rushed forward.

"Mother!"

He caught Evelyn before she collapsed.

She pressed her face against his chest.

"My boy."

Damon held her tightly.

"I'm here."

Delaney approached slowly.

Evelyn reached for her.

"You came."

Delaney knelt beside her.

"Of course I did."

Behind them, investigators entered the facility.

Dr. Mercer was arrested.

Charles Hale was found attempting to destroy financial records.

And, in a locked office behind the main examination room, police discovered Victor Sloane.

Alive.

Older.

And no longer able to hide behind the death he had staged.

Damon watched officers escort Victor outside.

For eighteen years, Damon had imagined confronting his father's killer.

He had pictured rage.

Violence.

Revenge.

But when Victor passed him, Damon said only one thing.

"You don't get to take anything else from my family."

He turned away.

And that decision would change the rest of his life.

By dawn, Evelyn was safe in a hospital.

Independent physicians confirmed that she had been given inappropriate sedating medications that likely worsened her confusion.

Her recovery would take time.

But the doctors were cautiously optimistic.

Damon sat beside her bed.

Delaney stood near the window.

For the first time since the night in the alley, the world seemed quiet.

Then Adrian entered.

He carried a sealed envelope.

"Margaret left one final instruction."

Delaney turned.

"What instruction?"

Adrian handed it to her.

Inside was a legal document.

A trust agreement.

Her mother's signature appeared beside Thomas Bianchi's.

Delaney read the first paragraph.

Then she looked at Damon in disbelief.

Because twenty-eight years earlier, Thomas Bianchi had secretly established a fund in Margaret Whitfield's name.

And its current value was more than twelve million dollars.

May you like

But the money came with one condition.

Delaney had to decide whether the Bianchi family deserved to keep its empire.
