Chapter 14 - THE FIRST STEP NOBODY BELIEVED POSSIBLE

Three months later, Dominic Rizzo stood between two parallel bars in a rehabilitation gym.

His hands trembled.

Sweat ran down his forehead.

His legs shook beneath him.

Piper stood nearby, holding her breath.

“Ready?” the therapist asked.

Dominic nodded.

“Let's do it.”

The therapist adjusted his support harness.

“Remember, small movements. No rushing.”

Dominic looked toward Piper.

She smiled.

“You've got this.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Don't start.”

“Start what?”

“The inspirational speeches.”

She grinned.

“Fine. Fall dramatically and I'll rate your performance.”

The therapist laughed.

Dominic shook his head.

Then he looked down.

For months, he'd worked harder than anyone expected.

Physical therapy.

Strength training.

Occupational therapy.

Pain management.

Some days brought progress.

Other days brought exhaustion and frustration.

There were mornings when he couldn't complete exercises he'd managed the day before.

There were nights when he told Piper he hated his body.

And she listened.

She didn't promise miracles.

She didn't tell him to be grateful.

She reminded him that progress wasn't always measured in steps.

Sometimes it was measured in showing up again.

Now, standing between the bars, Dominic shifted his weight.

His right leg trembled.

The therapist watched closely.

“Good. Hold that.”

Dominic gritted his teeth.

Then he moved his right foot forward.

Only a few inches.

But it moved.

Piper covered her mouth.

Dominic stared down.

“Did I…?”

The therapist smiled.

“Yes.”

Dominic looked at Piper.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You did it.”

He laughed.

A real laugh.

Then he cried.

Piper hurried toward him.

The therapist helped him sit safely.

Dominic pulled her into his arms.

“I moved.”

She nodded, crying.

“I saw.”

“I actually moved.”

“I know.”

He kissed her forehead.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Dominic whispered, “Thank you.”

Piper pulled back.

“For what?”

“For not giving up on me.”

She smiled through tears.

“You're the one who did the work.”

He shook his head.

“You made me believe it was worth trying.”

Piper kissed him.

And for the first time, Dominic didn't feel like a broken man.

He felt like a man with a future.

That afternoon, they returned to the estate.

The curtains were open.

Fresh flowers filled the rooms.

The gardens were being restored.

And the west wing had been transformed into a bright family library.

Isabella visited every weekend.

Garrett, recovering from his shoulder injury, had retired from security work and started a consulting business.

Vincent and Margaret were facing serious criminal charges.

Dr. Harris had lost his medical license and was cooperating with investigators.

Dominic had begun dismantling the illegal parts of his business empire.

It wasn't simple.

There were investigations.

Financial losses.

Former associates who wanted revenge.

But Dominic no longer cared about protecting the reputation he'd inherited.

He wanted something better.

A legitimate future.

A life where nobody had to be afraid.

That evening, Piper found him sitting on the terrace.

He held a small velvet box.

She stopped.

“Dominic?”

He looked up.

“Come here.”

Her heart began racing.

She approached slowly.

“What's that?”

He smiled.

“Something I've been carrying around for two weeks.”

Piper stared.

“Dominic…”

He opened the box.

Inside was a diamond ring.

Her hands flew to her mouth.

But before he could speak, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

Detective Hayes.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Piper felt her stomach tighten.

Dominic listened.

Then he looked at her.

“Piper, there's something you need to know.”

Her heart stopped.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“They found your father's final recording.”

Piper stared at him.

“And?”

May you like

Dominic's eyes filled with tears.

“He left you a message.”
