Chapter 10 - THE FLOOR THAT DIDN’T EXIST

The explosion didn’t bring Hayes Tower down.

It destroyed part of the basement.

Sprinklers activated.

Alarms screamed.

Agents dragged Raymond away while firefighters rushed downstairs.

Vincent stared toward the floor.

“What did he mean?”

Luke coughed through smoke.

“Arthur’s last secret.”

Grandma’s ledger contained references to a sealed archive.

But no location.

Raymond had tried to destroy something beneath the building.

Police evacuated most floors while investigators inspected the damaged basement.

Hours later, a structural engineer approached us.

“There’s a void behind the western foundation wall.”

Vincent frowned.

“A room?”

“Possibly.”

“There is no room on the plans.”

The engineer nodded.

“That’s the problem.”

A hidden level.

Of course.

After emergency crews declared the area safe, investigators opened a narrow access corridor.

Inside was a small underground office.

Dusty.

Sealed for years.

Arthur Hayes had built himself a hidden archive.

Vincent entered after authorities cleared it.

I followed with permission.

The room held file cabinets.

Photographs.

Old VHS tapes.

Documents.

And a single desk.

On top sat an envelope.

FOR VINCENT.

Vincent’s hands trembled.

He opened it.

His father’s handwriting.

Son, if you are reading this, Raymond finally lost.

Vincent closed his eyes.

He continued.

I failed you in many ways. I taught you fear before I taught you trust.

His jaw tightened.

I built an empire using methods I regret. Daniel Bennett showed me that men who excuse evil because they provide for their families are still choosing evil.

I thought about my father.

A man I barely remembered.

He had changed Arthur Hayes.

Maybe not enough.

But something.

Vincent kept reading.

If I die before I can correct what I built, do not inherit my sins as if they are family property.

Vincent’s breathing changed.

Then:

And if Claire Bennett ever comes back into your life, protect her only when she asks. Eleanor will understand why.

Vincent looked at me.

I almost laughed despite the tears in my eyes.

“Your father knew you’d need instructions.”

He actually smiled.

“Apparently.”

The final line changed everything.

Claire is not connected to our family only through Daniel.

I stared.

Vincent read again.

Then turned the page.

There was a birth certificate.

Mine.

Claire Rachel Bennett.

Mother: Rachel Bennett.

Father:

Not Daniel.

Vincent stared at the name.

I read it.

My heart stopped.

Arthur Hayes.

Vincent’s father.

I looked at him.

“No.”

Vincent stepped backward.

The room seemed to shrink.

May you like

If the document was real, Vincent wasn’t simply connected to my past.

He was my half-brother.
