Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO WANTED MY FAMILY

Sophia Laurent had wanted Elena's life.
That was what I finally understood.
Not just the mansion.
Not just the clothes.
Not just the title of Mrs. Hale.
She wanted the family Elena and I had almost built.
I stared at the altered birth certificate.
Sophia Laurent.
Mother.
Marcus Hale.
Father.
The document felt like an insult to everything Elena had endured.
For a moment, rage overwhelmed me.
Then Elena touched my arm.
"Marcus."
I turned.
She looked exhausted.
But her voice was steady.
"Don't do anything that could make this harder for Amelia."
I nodded slowly.
"You're right."
And she was.
Our daughter needed stability.
Not another powerful man deciding the world should burn because he was angry.
The investigation continued.
Sophia's financial records were examined.
Adrian Laurent's companies were audited.
Several hospital employees agreed to cooperate.
And the altered records became central evidence in an expanding criminal case.
Sophia denied wrongdoing through her attorney.
She claimed she believed Elena had lost the pregnancy and that Amelia was a different child.
But the DNA results and document history raised serious questions.
Then an old email surfaced.
Sophia had written to her father:
If Elena believes the baby died, she'll stop asking questions.
Marcus already believes whatever I tell him.
I stared at the words.
They hurt because they were true.
I'd believed Sophia when she said Elena was difficult.
Unreasonable.
Too emotional.
I'd believed her when she said Rosa should be fired.
I'd believed her when she told me to ignore calls during business trips.
And I'd believed her because the lies served the life I wanted.
I had helped create the conditions that allowed her to deceive us.
Elena looked toward me.
"What are you thinking?"
I swallowed.
"That I failed you."
She was quiet.
Then she said, "Yes."
I closed my eyes.
She continued.
"But right now, this isn't about our marriage."
I nodded.
"It's about Amelia."
The custody and identity proceedings began through the appropriate legal process.
Independent child specialists were appointed.
The caregivers were interviewed.
And arrangements were developed to introduce Elena and me gradually, if the court approved.
We didn't rush.
We didn't demand that Amelia call us Mommy and Daddy.
We let her learn who we were.
One afternoon, Elena received a photograph through the child advocate.
Amelia was drawing at a small table.
Her picture showed a house.
A tree.
Three people.
And a yellow sun.
Elena cried.
"She likes painting."
I smiled sadly.
"Like you."
Then Rebecca called.
She had located an archived letter from one of the hospital nurses.
The nurse wrote that she had attempted to report the altered birth records.
But someone from Laurent Strategic Holdings threatened her.
Then she included one final detail.
Sophia wasn't the person who originally suggested taking the baby.
The plan had been proposed by a man connected to my organization.
My oldest adviser.
Victor Salerno.
The same man who'd helped build my empire.
Then Rebecca showed me a transfer authorization signed by Victor.

And beside it were four words.
THE HEIR MUST REMAIN HIDDEN.
