Chapter 8 - VIVIAN’S CONFESSION

Nobody believed her.
That was my first reaction.
Not because Vivian was incapable of cruelty.
Because confession can be another form of control.
Especially in my family.
“Why?”
She did not answer over the phone.
She came to the estate.
Two hours later.
No lawyer.
Bad decision.
Adrian insisted she have counsel before giving formal statements.
Good decision.
I was not interested in manufacturing a confession that collapsed later.
Vivian agreed to speak only about family history until her attorney arrived.
She entered the library and looked at Maria.
“I’m sorry.”
Maria’s face was empty.
“Everybody says that.”
Vivian nodded.
“Yes.”
“Did you order Vincent to take Mateo?”
“I gave Vincent a message.”
“What message?”
“That Mateo had the original drive.”
Maria’s eyes closed.
That was enough to put him in danger.
“Why?”
Vivian looked at Anthony.
“Because I thought Anthony had already corrupted him.”
Mateo.
She believed my father had recruited his hidden son not merely to investigate Vincent but to help preserve the old succession system.
Vivian wanted the council destroyed.
Why?
Because of my mother.
Elena.
Vivian believed the Hale governance trust was the reason Elena spent her final years terrified.
Every family decision required negotiations.
Anthony hid Mateo partly to preserve his vote.
Grandfather Vincent manipulated bloodline.
Council trustees interfered in marriages, property, even education.
After Elena died, Vivian wanted everything exposed.
No more secret sons.
No more parentage leverage.
No more family council.
That sounded almost reasonable.
Then she made it monstrous.
She began feeding internal documents to Vincent Russo.
Not route information.
Governance documents.
She wanted him to expose Anthony’s financial manipulation.
Vincent saw opportunity.
He began selling operational information separately.
Vivian claimed she never authorized that.
But she continued using him after discovering he was dangerous.
Choice.
Then Mateo found the drive.
It contained proof Vincent had gone beyond their arrangement.
Vivian panicked.
If Daniel saw it, he would discover her involvement.
So she told Vincent Mateo had it.
“I told him to get the drive.”
Maria’s voice was barely audible.
“You knew he had a child.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he was Daniel’s brother.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he wanted out.”
“Yes.”
“What did you think Vincent would do?”
Vivian started crying.
“Scare him.”
Maria laughed.
Sharp.
Broken.
“You gave my husband to a traitor and expected manners?”
Vivian had no answer.
Then:
“Did you know about the trailer?”
“Not until later.”
“When?”
“After Anthony told Margaret to wait.”
My father looked up.
“You knew?”
Vivian nodded.
“And what did you do?”
“I called Vincent.”
“What did he say?”
“That Mateo would be released after he told him where the copy was.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed to.”
There.
Another person choosing the version that made her decisions survivable.
Maria stood.
“I never want you near Sofia.”
Vivian nodded immediately.
“You won’t.”
Good.
Then I asked:
“Why remove the file now?”
“Because I heard Mateo’s trigger had happened.”
The blanket.
Again.
Vivian knew I would receive the drive.
She feared the original contained a voice message proving she sent Vincent after Mateo.
She entered Adrian’s vault using an old recovery credential Frederick had once given her during Elena estate litigation.
How had the credential remained active?
Negligence.
Adrian’s firm would investigate.
Vivian removed only one encrypted folder.
She did not destroy the drive.
Where was the folder?
Her attorney arrived.
She surrendered it through counsel.
Good.
No theatrical burning.
We opened a forensic copy.
Inside:
Messages.
Vivian to Vincent.
GET THE DRIVE. DO NOT HURT HIM.
Vincent:
THEN MAKE HIM COOPERATE.
Vivian:
HE’S FAMILY.
Vincent:
SO ARE MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO GET IN MY WAY.
My stomach turned.
Then another message after Mateo disappeared:
VIVIAN:
WHERE IS HE?
VINCENT:
COLD STORAGE.
VIVIAN:
GET HIM OUT.
VINCENT:
ANTHONY WANTS THE DRIVE FIRST.
There.
Vincent knew Anthony was waiting.
He used my father’s hesitation as permission.
Then:
VIVIAN:
DANIEL WILL KILL ALL OF US.
Vincent:
ONLY IF HE FINDS OUT.
I read the line twice.
My entire organization had been built around fear of what I might do.
So everyone lied.
Those lies caused more damage than anything they feared from me.
That mattered.
Then forensic review found something else.
One outgoing message from Vincent.
Recipient:
C-17.
Text:
TORRES SECURED. WAITING ON CONFIRMATION.
Reply:
KEEP HIM THERE.
Timestamp:
11:43.
Two minutes after Mateo called Margaret.
Who sent it?
That was the key.
The C-17 device authentication came from the old nursery office.
My father’s room.
But location alone did not prove Anthony typed it.
The estate network could be spoofed internally.
We needed device identifier.
Adrian found it.
Tablet:
EH-02.
Elena Hale.
My mother’s old tablet.
Impossible.
Destroyed years ago.
Or supposedly.
Anthony looked confused.
Nicholas looked worse.
“Nick?”
He closed his eyes.
“I kept it.”
There.
“Why?”
“Elena left it with me.”
“Where was it?”
“In the rehabilitation residence.”
“So the C-17 reply came from your device.”
“Yes.”
Maria stared.
Nicholas raised both hands.
“I did not send it.”
“How many people had access?”
“Staff.”
“Names.”
He listed six.
Nurses.
Therapists.
Private aide.
One name stopped Marcus.
“Say that again.”
“Lydia Dane.”
His sister.
Margaret’s daughter.
Marcus’s younger sister.
Forty-seven.
Physical therapist.
She had worked at Nicholas’s rehabilitation residence for three years.
Margaret went white.
“No.”
Marcus looked sick.
“My sister hates the family business.”
Nicholas whispered:
“She also knew Elena.”
As a child.
Lydia had been fourteen when Elena died.
My mother treated her like a niece.
Why would she use Elena’s device to order Mateo held?
We called the rehabilitation center.
Lydia had resigned that morning.
No forwarding address.
Then Marcus checked his personal messages.
One from Lydia.
Sent six hours earlier.
MARCUS:
I’m sorry.
Then:
Mom chose the Hales over us our whole lives. I wasn’t going to let Daniel become another Anthony.
My stomach dropped.
Vivian closed her eyes.
“She was working with me.”
Of course.
“How long?”
“Years.”
Lydia helped Vivian access family systems.
She hated the council.
Hated Margaret’s loyalty to it.
Hated Anthony.
But did she order Mateo held?
Vivian shook her head.
“I never told her to.”
The C-17 reply suggested otherwise.
Then Maria asked:
“Why would Lydia hurt Mateo if she hated the Hales?”
Vivian whispered:
“Because Mateo changed sides.”
“What?”
“He stopped wanting to destroy the council.”
Why?
Mateo discovered Elena’s trust.
The letters.
Me.
Sofia.
He decided reform was better than destruction.
He wanted to tell me everything and claim his place openly.
Lydia saw that as betrayal.
Another man choosing family over “the cause.”
So she helped Vincent keep him until he surrendered the drive.
A pressure tactic.
That became death.
Then Margaret’s phone rang.
Lydia.
She answered on speaker.
“Mom.”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“You ordered them to keep Mateo inside.”
Silence.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Lydia.”
She whispered:
“I didn’t know the refrigeration was running.”
Maria stood completely still.
Maybe true.
Not enough.
“I thought they were using an empty trailer.”
“You said keep him there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he was going to hand everything back to Anthony.”
“No,” I said.
Lydia went silent.
“He was going to hand it to me.”
Another pause.
Then:
“That’s what I was afraid of.”
“Why?”
Her answer came quietly.
“Because once you knew Mateo was your brother, you would forgive Anthony.”
I looked at my father.
Then at Maria.
“No.”
Lydia laughed bitterly.
“You don’t understand family.”
“No.”
I looked at Sofia’s yellow drawing.
“I’m beginning to.”
Then Lydia said:
“You think Mateo’s death was the secret?”
My pulse changed.
“What?”
“He found something on Elena’s tablet.”
“About what?”
“Your mother’s trust.”
“We found it.”
“No.”
Lydia’s voice dropped.
“Not the money.”
Then:
“The reason Elena created two beneficiary shares before Daniel was even born.”
I stared.
Mateo was already born.
I was not.
That seemed normal.
Then Lydia continued:
“She didn’t label the second share Daniel.”
My chest tightened.
“What did she label it?”
Silence.
Then:
“UNBORN CHILD - PATERNITY TO BE CONFIRMED.”
My father went white.
Nicholas whispered:
“Oh God.”
I looked at Anthony.
“What?”
He said nothing.
Lydia continued:
May you like
“Elena wasn’t sure Anthony was your biological father.”
And suddenly the Hale family had spent two generations destroying people over bloodlines nobody had ever bothered to verify.
