Chapter 11 - THE GRANDFATHER WHO NEVER DIED

For the first time since Kareem Rahal entered the Bellweather Room, I understood how dangerous the truth could become.
Victor Mallory wasn't simply threatening Trent.
He was offering something I had never believed possible.
My grandfather.
Farid Rahal.
Alive.
"He's lying," I whispered.
Kareem didn't answer.
He stared at the video.
Then slowly shook his head.
"Maybe not."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"My brother knew how to disappear."
"But it's been thirty-eight years."
Kareem's voice broke.
"And I've spent every one of them hoping I was wrong about his death."
The detective immediately arranged for a tactical response at the abandoned shipping terminal.
Kareem was instructed not to approach.
He obeyed.
Though I could see how much it cost him.
The brass key was placed into evidence.
Investigators examined its history and confirmed that it belonged to a storage system connected to Farid's former company.
Meanwhile, officers surrounded the terminal.
Negotiators contacted Victor.
He demanded immunity.
Money.
And the original financial records Farid had hidden.
The detective refused to make promises outside the law.
Instead, he focused on securing Trent's release.
Hours passed.
I sat beside Layla in a waiting room.
Kareem paced near the window.
Finally, the detective returned.
"Trent is safe."
I exhaled.
"And Victor?"
"In custody."
Kareem closed his eyes.
The nightmare was finally beginning to end.
But the detective wasn't finished.
"During the search, we found something else."
My heart pounded.
"What?"
"A locked room containing medical supplies, old correspondence, and documents under several false identities."
Kareem stared.
"Farid?"
The detective nodded slowly.
"We've identified a man living under the name Daniel Mercer."
I stood.
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
My legs nearly gave way.
"Where?"
"He's receiving medical evaluation."
Kareem covered his mouth.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he whispered:
"My brother."
The detective explained that Farid had lived under a protected identity for years.
But Victor had eventually discovered him.
Farid was forced to remain hidden after Victor threatened Samira and Amina.
He later suffered serious health problems and lost contact with the few people who knew his identity.
Victor used that isolation to control him.
For decades, Farid lived under the shadow of a man who had stolen his family.
I began crying.
"Does he know about me?"
The detective nodded.
"He asked about you."
My breath caught.
"What did he say?"
The detective smiled gently.
"He asked whether Samira's granddaughter still speaks Arabic."
Tears streamed down my face.
Then he added:
"And he said there's something he wants to give you."
"What?"
The detective opened an evidence bag.
Inside was a small silver bracelet with a blue stone.
Grandma's bracelet.
The one Kareem had recognized.
Attached was a folded note.

In shaky handwriting, it read:
"For Nia. The granddaughter I never stopped loving, even when I couldn't come home."
