Chapter 1 - THE DOCUMENT CATHERINE SENT MIDFLIGHT

I was somewhere above New Jersey when Catherine Weston sent me the document that changed the divorce from painful to dangerous.
The cabin lights had been dimmed.
I had changed out of my ivory gown and into a soft sweater the flight attendant found in the aircraft closet. My shoes sat on the carpet beside me, and my swollen ankles were elevated on two pillows.
For the first time that night, my daughter kicked.
Hard.
I pressed my palm against the movement.
“Good timing,” I whispered.
My phone vibrated.
CATHERINE:
Read this before Andrew’s attorneys contact you.
Attachment:
WESTON LEGACY RESTRUCTURING - CONFIDENTIAL.
I hesitated before opening it.
Twenty-seven pages appeared.
Most were financial.
Trust structures.
Corporate entities.
Estate planning.
Nothing immediately unusual.
Then I reached page eleven.
PROPOSED BENEFICIARY:
UNBORN CHILD OF ANDREW WESTON.
I sat straighter.
That was our daughter.
Fine.
Then:
PRIMARY TRUSTEE: ANDREW WESTON.
SUCCESSOR TRUSTEE: CATHERINE WESTON.
Still understandable.
But beneath it was another section.
MATERNAL CONSENT AND GUARDIANSHIP CONTINGENCY.
My name appeared.
Charlotte Weston.
Status:
CONSENT PENDING EXECUTION.
I had never seen the document.
Then I read the next paragraph.
In the event of marital dissolution, incapacity, extended hospitalization, or maternal inability to provide primary care, Andrew Weston may petition for immediate temporary custodial authority and relocate the child to any Weston family residence deemed appropriate for security or medical reasons.
My blood turned cold.
Our daughter had not even been born.
Andrew was already preparing documents for a custody fight.
I called Catherine.
She answered immediately.
“What is this?”
Her voice was quiet.
“Something Andrew asked Weston Family Services to prepare six weeks ago.”
“Six weeks?”
Before the gala.
Before the public kiss.
Before I filed.
“Why?”
“He told the family office you were considering spending several months in Pennsylvania after the birth.”
“That’s true.”
“He described it differently.”
“How?”
Catherine hesitated.
“He said you were emotionally fragile after the miscarriages and might become incapable of handling the baby alone.”
For a second, I could not breathe.
I had cried after losing two pregnancies.
Apparently Andrew had taken grief and turned it into future evidence.
“Did you believe him?”
“No.”
“Then why was this drafted?”
“Family Services follows instructions from controlling family members.”
“Andrew?”
“Yes.”
I looked again.
There were supporting notes.
Charlotte experiences heightened emotional reactions surrounding pregnancy.
Charlotte has expressed desire to withdraw from Manhattan society.
Charlotte demonstrates distrust regarding Andrew’s professional relationships.
Distrust.
Meaning Lila.
He had been cheating while documenting my suspicion as instability.
I closed my eyes.
Then Catherine said:
“There’s another page.”
I scrolled.
Page seventeen.
PROPOSED RESIDENTIAL ASSET:
Weston House, Greenwich.
I knew it.
A twelve-bedroom estate owned by a family holding company.
Andrew had once told me we might raise children there someday.
Then I saw:
RESIDENT CARE COORDINATOR:
LILA SUMMERS.
My fingers went numb.
“What?”
“She’s listed as what?”
Catherine answered softly.
“Read the staffing schedule.”
I did.
Lila was not merely Andrew’s twenty-three-year-old mistress.
May you like
According to the draft, she was already being positioned inside the household structure that would surround my daughter if Andrew obtained primary control.
And Andrew had commissioned the document six weeks before publicly humiliating me.
