Chapter 5 - The Doctor Who Never Examined Her

Dr. Wallace had written that Emily showed “persistent paranoid ideation.”

He had written it after one ten-minute appointment.

An appointment where Emily complained about insomnia.

No psychiatric evaluation.

No formal screening.

No referral.

Yet the phrase appeared inside a confidential note that somehow made its way into a packet prepared by Ethan’s divorce attorney.

Cassandra stared at the copied record.

“This is highly unusual.”

I used stronger language.

Emily looked devastated.

“I told him I couldn’t sleep because Ethan kept disappearing at night.”

“What did Wallace say?”

“That marriage causes stress.”

“Anything else?”

“He asked whether my mother was controlling.”

I went still.

“Me?”

Emily nodded.

“He asked whether growing up in a military family made me afraid of authority.”

That was not a normal insomnia interview.

Somebody had been building a narrative around both of us long before the hospital.

Cassandra contacted an independent medical-records attorney.

We learned that Dr. Wallace had known the Prescott family for more than twenty years.

Margaret funded part of his clinic’s expansion.

Again.

Influence did not automatically mean conspiracy.

But it meant questions.

Emily’s full chart revealed something else.

Three entries had been added after the date of her only appointment.

Follow-up observations.

Except Emily had never returned.

One said:

Patient remains emotionally volatile according to spouse.

Another:

Family reports fixation on leaving marriage despite absence of objective marital danger.

I read that sentence twice.

They had turned her attempts to escape into symptoms.

My daughter started crying.

“I thought I was losing my mind.”

I moved beside her.

“Why?”

“Because every time I said something was wrong, Ethan told me I was imagining it. Then Margaret said Dr. Wallace agreed.”

There are moments when motherhood feels like being given a glimpse into all the pain your child hid to protect you.

They are unbearable.

“Emily.”

She looked at me.

“You were not weak because they made you doubt yourself.”

“I should’ve called sooner.”

“You called when you could.”

That was all.

No lecture.

No colonel.

Just her mother.

The medical complaint process began separately.

So did Cassandra’s legal work.

Meanwhile, Ethan’s attorneys abruptly became interested in settlement discussions.

That told me they were worried.

They offered Emily the downtown condominium, her personal accounts, and a confidential divorce resolution if she withdrew allegations of assault and financial misconduct.

Emily looked at the offer for less than a minute.

“No.”

Cassandra smiled slightly.

“Why?”

“I’m not trading truth for property that was already mine.”

Again.

My daughter.

Still there.

Then Ethan came personally.

Not to our location.

To Cassandra’s office.

He brought a letter.

He asked that Emily read it.

She refused.

I did too.

Cassandra read it for legal relevance.

Her expression changed halfway through.

“What?”

She placed the letter down.

“Ethan says Brandon was responsible for most of the financial transfers.”

Emily stared at her.

“What?”

“He claims Brandon convinced Margaret that Emily intended to expose family business irregularities.”

“Which irregularities?”

Cassandra looked at me.

“He doesn’t say.”

I thought of Brandon laughing in the hospital.

Some women marry into families they’re not prepared to handle.

Maybe that statement had meant more than arrogance.

Cassandra continued.

“Ethan claims he tried to stop Brandon.”

Emily’s face hardened.

“He held me down.”

Silence.

Whatever Ethan knew did not erase what he did.

Then Cassandra reached the final paragraph.

“He says the guest house has cameras.”

Emily went completely still.

“What?”

“Interior security cameras.”

“No.”

Her breathing quickened.

“No, they told me there weren’t any.”

Cassandra read Ethan’s exact wording.

Brandon believed the cameras had been disabled.

They weren’t.

If true, somewhere inside the Prescott security system existed video of what happened to Emily.

And Ethan had just told us where to look.
