Chapter 13 - THE SIGNATURE THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

Salvatore Marquette's signature appeared on the document authorizing my father's transfer.

I stared at it until the letters blurred.

For weeks, I'd believed he was helping us uncover the truth.

Now I was wondering whether he'd been involved all along.

I asked Detective Mitchell to arrange a meeting.

Salvatore arrived with his attorney and an ASL interpreter.

He looked toward me.

Lily.

I didn't smile.

I placed the document on the table.

Explain this.

His eyes moved toward the signature.

Then his expression changed.

Where did you get that?

From the investigation.

He stared.

For several seconds, his hands remained still.

Then he signed slowly.

I didn't authorize this.

My chest tightened.

It's your signature.

He nodded.

It resembles mine.

Are you saying it's forged?

Yes.

I looked toward Detective Mitchell.

She explained that forensic examination of the document was underway.

Then Salvatore asked to see the original electronic authorization records.

Investigators had obtained them.

The records showed an unusual access pattern.

The signature had been applied through an administrative account managed by Dominic's company.

The same account had been used to approve several financial transfers.

Salvatore's attorney provided comparison documents.

The forensic review later found significant discrepancies supporting the conclusion that the authorization had been falsified.

I felt relief.

Then anger.

Then exhaustion.

Another lie.

Another stolen identity.

Another powerful man manipulating the lives of people who couldn't defend themselves.

Salvatore looked toward me.

I understand why you questioned me.

I swallowed.

I had to.

He nodded.

You were right to.

The answer surprised me.

He didn't demand trust.

Didn't become offended.

Didn't remind me he'd helped Danny.

He simply accepted that the evidence mattered.

For the first time, I realized trust wasn't believing someone could never do wrong.

It was being able to ask difficult questions without being punished.

Then Detective Mitchell received a call.

Dominic Marquette had been located.

He was staying at a private property outside Milwaukee.

Authorities had obtained warrants connected to the financial investigation and Michael Bennett's disappearance.

Dominic was arrested without incident.

The news spread quickly.

Several associated financial accounts were frozen.

Investigators began examining the old warehouse explosion again.

The records suggested Dominic had diverted money through fraudulent shipping contracts.

They also raised serious questions about his role in the events leading to Angelo Marquette's death.

Salvatore cooperated with authorities.

He provided company documents.

Disclosed historical financial arrangements.

And began separating his lawful businesses from the criminal operations he'd inherited.

It wasn't easy.

There were legal consequences.

Financial losses.

And people who doubted his sincerity.

But he continued.

Then Dad's medical records produced another important finding.

The treating specialists believed his long-term memory difficulties were consistent with the documented head injury.

His ability to remember our names had remained stronger than his ability to recall dates and events.

For the first time, I understood that Dad hadn't chosen to forget us.

He had been injured.

Hidden.

And denied the chance to find his children.

That evening, I traveled to Michigan.

Dad sat beside the garden window.

When he saw me, his face brightened.

"Lily."

I ran into his arms.

He held me tightly.

Then whispered, "Did they find the man?"

I nodded.

"Yes, Daddy."

His eyes filled.

"Good."

He looked toward Danny.

Then raised his hands.

My boy.

Danny smiled through tears.

Hi, Dad.

For several minutes, we held each other.

Then Dad reached into his pocket.

He removed a folded piece of paper.

"I've been keeping this."

My heart tightened.

"What is it?"

"A letter."

I stared.

"For who?"

He smiled sadly.

"For the man who helped me save your mother's life."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

Dad looked directly at me.

Then whispered the final secret.

"Angelo Marquette."

May you like

Salvatore's father.

And suddenly, I realized our families had been connected long before the warehouse explosion.
