Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH CAME HOME

Lorenzo Santangelo had spent ten years hiding from the consequences of his own empire.

Now investigators had evidence that his disappearance was connected to the financial operation Anna Ror discovered.

The investigation expanded across multiple states and overseas financial accounts.

Records were preserved.

Witnesses came forward.

Several companies were placed under court-supervised review.

And the private security firm's actions surrounding Anna's death became part of a renewed criminal investigation.

Billy watched the developments from her mother's living room.

She was exhausted.

But for the first time in four years, exhaustion didn't feel like defeat.

Deardra sat beside her.

The television showed footage of reporters gathering outside a courthouse.

Then a headline appeared.

DOMINIC SANTANGELO DETAINED IN FINANCIAL CONSPIRACY INVESTIGATION.

Billy covered her mouth.

Her mother reached for her hand.

"Anna would've wanted the truth."

Billy nodded.

"I know."

But the news wasn't finished.

Authorities had located Lorenzo Santangelo overseas.

He was alive.

And through legal proceedings, investigators began examining his involvement in the foundation's financial network and the concealment of disputed assets.

Rafe cooperated fully.

He provided records from his family's businesses.

Disclosed relationships that had previously been hidden.

And accepted independent oversight of the legitimate companies he continued to control.

But he also faced difficult questions about his own past.

He'd led a criminal organization.

He'd benefited from businesses whose records he hadn't examined.

And he'd ignored Anna when she asked for help.

Those choices carried consequences.

Rafe began the process of separating lawful operations from criminal activities and cooperating with authorities.

Some associates abandoned him.

Others called him weak.

For the first time, he didn't appear concerned.

Then the reopened investigation into Anna's death produced an important finding.

Evidence from the recovered security files supported the theory that another vehicle had interfered with Anna's car shortly before the crash.

Investigators identified additional witnesses and communications linking people associated with Dominic to the incident.

The proceedings would take time.

There would be challenges.

Disputed evidence.

And difficult testimony.

But the story of Anna's death was no longer being treated as an unquestioned accident.

Then Billy received a letter.

It came from Rafe.

There was no expensive gift.

No demand to meet.

Just a handwritten apology.

Billy,

Your sister came to me because she believed I could help.

I didn't listen.

I cannot change that.

But I can stop pretending that failing to know is the same as having no responsibility.

Billy began crying.

The letter continued.

I hope the truth gives your family some measure of peace.

And I hope you finish the work Anna believed in.

Billy folded the paper.

For a long time, she stared at the sewing machine.

Then she opened the second drawer.

The thick file remained beneath the spools of thread.

Four years of evidence.

Four years of grief.

Four years of refusing to give up.

She lifted the folder out.

And for the first time, she understood that the next chapter of her life didn't need to be about proving Anna was wronged.

It could be about honoring what Anna created.

Then Deardra spoke quietly from the doorway.

"Billy?"

She turned.

Her mother smiled through tears.

"There's something I never told you about Anna's final collection."

Billy's heart tightened.

"What?"

Deardra opened an old wooden box.

Inside were twelve original fashion sketches.

Each bore Anna's signature.

And beneath the final sketch was a note.

If anything happens to me, give Billy the company.

Billy stared.

May you like

Her sister hadn't merely wanted justice.

She'd wanted Billy to inherit the dream they began together.
