Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO STOLE DOMENICO'S NAME

Peter Castiglione had spent nineteen years believing his parents betrayed the family.

He'd been told Sam stole money.

That Rose helped him escape.

That both died in a warehouse fire before he could confront them.

Now his father was telling him the entire story had been manufactured.

And worse, the man who raised Peter afterward was responsible.

Silvio Castiglione.

His uncle.

The respected family patriarch.

The man who taught him how to lead.

Peter stood beside the hospital window.

His expression was unreadable.

“What do you mean he stole my name?”

Sam opened a folder an attorney had helped him recover.

Inside was a birth certificate.

DOMENICO PIETRO CASTIGLIONE.

Born September 14.

Son of Samuel and Rosalia Castiglione.

Peter stared at it.

“So?”

Sam turned the page.

A second document appeared.

A legal identity amendment completed years later.

Peter Castiglione.

Father listed as unknown.

Mother listed as deceased.

Peter slowly sat down.

“Why?”

Rose took his hand.

She whispered, “To disconnect you from the family trust.”

My stomach tightened.

Sam continued.

“Your grandfather structured the inheritance through our direct descendants. Silvio couldn't access certain assets while our identities remained intact.”

Peter closed his eyes.

“He erased us.”

Sam nodded.

“And convinced you we abandoned you.”

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then Peter turned toward me.

“Your husband discovered this?”

I nodded.

“He was trying to help.”

Peter lowered his head.

“I owe him more than I can ever repay.”

The words hurt.

Because Daniel was dead.

And no amount of money could bring him back.

That afternoon, Detective Bennett obtained additional records.

Documents linking Silvio to the false death certificates.

Financial transfers.

Unauthorized changes to the trust.

And suspicious payments to Vincent Rinaldi.

The evidence was mounting.

But then a new question emerged.

Why had Sam and Rose ended up homeless?

If they controlled part of a vast inheritance, why were they starving outside Patsy's Grill?

Sam explained quietly.

“They kept us in a residential facility for years. Then transferred us between private boarding houses.”

Rose wiped her eyes.

“When the payments stopped, we were put out.”

Peter's expression hardened.

“Who stopped the payments?”

Sam hesitated.

“Vincent.”

I swallowed.

The same man Daniel had suspected.

Then Rose reached for my hand.

“Mara, Daniel left something else.”

My heart raced.

“What?”

“A name.”

She glanced toward Peter.

“He told us that if anything happened to him, we should find a woman named Evelyn.”

I frowned.

“Evelyn who?”

Rose's expression changed.

“Evelyn Rinaldi.”

I stared.

“Rinaldi?”

Peter went completely still.

Then he whispered:

“Vincent's wife.”

May you like

And Sam added:

“She was the last person who saw your husband alive.”
