Chapter 11 - LOVE WASN’T SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE A DEBT

Nico didn’t defend the money.

He didn’t say most people would be grateful.

He didn’t remind me that my mother received excellent treatment because of him.

He simply listened.

“I spent a year thinking Mom had better insurance than we realized.”

“I know.”

“I worried about debt.”

“I know.”

“I thanked hospitals for financial assistance that didn’t exist.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“You let me live inside a lie because you thought the outcome justified it.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand why that sounds exactly like everything else?”

He did now.

That was the terrible part.

Three years earlier, Nico would have called my anger irrational.

Now he looked ashamed.

“I thought if I told you, you’d feel obligated to me.”

“So you secretly did it instead.”

“Yes.”

“That’s worse.”

“I know.”

I sat across from him.

“I loved you before the dresses.”

His eyes lifted.

“Before the penthouse.”

Silence.

“Before the black card.”

His throat moved.

“You kept giving me expensive proof because you didn’t know how to give me the one thing I asked for.”

“What?”

“You.”

That broke him more effectively than shouting ever could.

He looked away.

When he spoke again, his voice was rough.

“I don’t know how.”

“Then learn.”

Not for me.

I told him that too.

“If you learn because you think it guarantees I come back, you haven’t learned anything.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

Arthur entered before either of us said more.

Vincent had made a mistake.

He tried moving the stolen money after learning Dad’s records survived.

The transfer gave investigators a real-time path into three shell companies.

They could now connect Vincent directly to the theft.

But another transaction appeared.

Two million dollars transferred that morning.

Not to Vincent.

To someone named Daniel Cross.

Nico recognized the name.

His former security chief.

Daniel had disappeared eight months earlier after allegedly stealing from the organization.

Nico had assumed he fled.

Apparently Vincent had been paying him.

Arthur pulled up security archives.

Daniel had installed the penthouse surveillance system.

Including the hidden camera routes.

Including the basement blind spots.

Including the service entrance I used when I left.

My stomach tightened.

“He knew exactly how I’d get out.”

Arthur nodded.

“And he told Vincent.”

This had been waiting for me.

Vincent didn’t improvise when I left Nico.

He simply activated a plan already built around my habits.

Then Arthur opened one last recovered message between Vincent and Daniel.

IF SHE LEAVES ON HER OWN, EVEN BETTER.

NICO WILL BLAME HIMSELF.

Daniel replied:

AND IF SHE DOESN’T?

May you like

Vincent’s answer was three words.

MAKE HER LEAVE.
