Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING CARMINE COULD NOT RUIN

The vineyard wedding in Hudson Valley had no armed men.

Dominic checked.

Isabella caught him near catering tent.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You checked exits.”

“I was looking for restroom.”

“You checked generator.”

“Could be restroom.”

She rolled eyes.

“You are impossible.”

“Genetic.”

She softened.

“Uncle Adrian?”

Dominic smiled.

“Mostly.”

Isabella wore simple ivory gown.

No mafia extravagance.

No reporters.

Guests knew enough not ask.

Norah wore green dress.

Elena navy.

Teresa absent physically but represented by small photograph near family table.

Dominic carried Adrian's ring in pocket.

Norah had offered.

“Why?”

“Because he should be here.”

Dominic touched.

Before ceremony, Isabella stood alone with father.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“I'd worry if you were normal.”

He laughed.

Then she said:

“Carmine wrote.”

Dominic stiffened.

“What?”

“He wished me peace.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Do you want him here?”

She looked shocked.

“No.”

“Good.”

“But I cried.”

“Okay.”

“He was Uncle Carmine.”

“Yes.”

“He almost killed me.”

“Yes.”

“He also taught me ride bicycle.”

“Yes.”

She wiped tears.

“I hate that both are true.”

Dominic hugged.

“That’s adulthood.”

“Terrible.”

“Mostly.”

Music began.

Before stepping aisle, Isabella whispered:

“I’m proud of you.”

Dominic almost stopped.

“For what?”

“Not for prison.”

“Good.”

“For telling truth when it cost you.”

He could not answer.

She squeezed arm.

“Walk.”

They did.

Every step, Dominic remembered Adrian.

Father Vittorio.

Carmine.

Teresa.

People absent.

But aisle ended not grave.

Future.

Ethan waited.

Dominic did not “give away” daughter.

Officiant asked who supports marriage.

Dominic said:

“I do.”

Then stepped back.

At reception Norah toasted.

“When I first met Uncle Dominic, I held gun on him.”

Half guests knew.

Others gasped.

Dominic covered face.

Norah continued:

“Relationship improved.”

Laughter.

“I thought powerful man would either kill me or ignore me. Instead he listened.”

She looked at him.

“Not immediately. He slammed me into elevator wall first.”

More laughter.

“Context.”

Dominic called.

Norah smiled.

“But listening saved people.”

Then Isabella.

“Isabella taught us family doesn't have to choose between truth and love.”

Elena.

“My mother taught survival.”

Adrian.

“My father taught us through letters that leaving fear isn't betrayal.”

Dominic’s eyes filled.

“And Dominic taught something I didn't expect.”

She paused.

“Consequences don't mean love disappeared.”

Applause.

Dominic looked down.

Later father-daughter dance.

Isabella:

“Don't step dress.”

“I ran illegal empire. I can dance.”

“You're terrible.”

“Defamation.”

She smiled.

Across room Norah danced with Elena.

Dominic felt warmth.

Then Ethan’s father Michael joined him at bar.

“You're Isabella's dad?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Michael.”

“I know.”

“Of course you do.”

Dominic caught himself.

Old surveillance habits.

“I read wedding website.”

Michael laughed.

“Good save.”

They talked baseball.

Weather.

Retirement.

Michael asked:

“What did you do before?”

Dominic stared.

Across room Isabella noticed.

Mouthed:

Behave.

Dominic answered:

“Logistics.”

Not entirely false.

“Retired?”

“Very.”

Michael nodded.

No fear.

No whispered name.

Dominic loved.

At midnight, Adrian House called.

A seventeen-year-old resident named Marcus had left after argument.

Staff found him at bus station.

He refused return.

Dominic stepped outside and called.

“Marcus.”

“Go away.”

“Phone makes impossible.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand running.”

“You were rich.”

“I was prisoner in house I owned.”

Silence.

“What does that mean?”

“Another day.”

Marcus:

“My dad says family always comes first.”

Dominic looked through window at wedding.

“Family should matter.”

“Then why center tells me I don't have go home?”

“Because family doesn't get right to destroy you to prove importance.”

Marcus quiet.

Dominic continued:

“Come back tonight. Tomorrow you can decide next.”

“What if I leave again?”

“We talk again.”

No threats.

No debt.

Marcus agreed.

Dominic returned reception.

Norah had overheard last part.

“You're getting soft.”

“Dangerous rumor.”

“You like kids.”

“I tolerate.”

She leaned head on shoulder.

“Thank you.”

“For?”

“Not killing me in elevator.”

“Low standards.”

“I had rough night.”

Dominic laughed.

Then photographer called:

“Family photo!”

Dominic groaned.

Norah grabbed arm.

“Come.”

They assembled.

Isabella.

Ethan.

Elena.

Norah.

Dominic.

Teresa photo maybe not in formal.

Children not yet.

Friends.

Dominic looked.

No Carmine.

No Vittorio.

No empire.

But family.

Photographer:

“Closer.”

Dominic resisted.

Norah pulled.

“Stay quiet and follow me.”

He looked at her.

Same words.

Different world.

May you like

He smiled.

And obeyed.
