Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO GAVE LEO HER NAME

Dominic refused to believe the result.

They repeated it.

Same answer.

Elena had raised Leo.

Loved him.

Protected him.

But she had not given birth to him.

Her journal finally explained why.

Six years earlier, Elena had been pregnant.

That part was true.

She lost the baby at twenty-three weeks.

Dominic closed the journal.

He couldn’t continue.

Grace sat beside him until he could.

Elena nearly died.

While recovering, she learned something horrifying.

Another woman had delivered Dominic’s child in the same private clinic.

Dominic stared.

“Impossible.”

Unless Salvatore had arranged it.

The journal named the woman.

Marissa Cole.

Dominic remembered her.

One night.

A mistake during the worst months after Elena disappeared.

He had never known she became pregnant.

Marissa died during delivery from complications.

Salvatore paid the clinic to hide the birth.

Then he did something even stranger.

He contacted Elena.

Dominic’s father offered her the newborn.

Your child is gone. Dominic’s son needs a mother. Take him and disappear forever.

Grace felt sick.

Human grief turned into negotiation.

Again.

Elena initially refused.

Then she saw Leo.

Everything changed.

She raised him as her own.

Never told Dominic because Salvatore threatened to take the baby if she returned.

Dominic covered his face.

“My father built everyone’s life like a chessboard.”

Grace said nothing.

Sometimes nothing was kinder.

Leo’s biological mother, Marissa, had a surviving sister.

Claire Cole.

Where was she?

Alive.

Living in Vermont.

And she had spent six years believing her nephew died shortly after birth.

The clinic records had been falsified.

Another person robbed of family.

Dominic could have hidden it.

Grace knew that.

Nobody outside the room knew yet.

Instead he said:

“Call her.”

Grace looked at him.

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

That was honest.

“But Leo deserves the truth eventually.”

Claire Cole arrived three days later.

She cried the moment she saw him.

Leo did not understand why.

So Dominic told him only what a six-year-old needed.

“Your mommy Elena loved you and raised you. Another woman named Marissa gave birth to you. She died when you were born.”

Leo thought about that.

“So I have two moms?”

Dominic’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

“Both dead?”

“Yes.”

Leo hugged him.

Dominic held his son tightly.

Claire became Aunt Claire.

Slowly.

No demands.

No custody battle.

No tearing a child from another home.

Just another person added to the circle.

Grace watched Dominic handle it differently from Salvatore.

No secret.

No control.

No ownership.

Choice.

That night, Dominic found Grace on the hospital terrace.

“Dinner.”

She smiled.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything you say.”

“That sounds threatening.”

“It was meant romantically.”

“You need practice.”

He laughed.

Then became serious.

“Would your answer change if I wasn’t Dominic Moretti?”

Grace thought.

“I don’t know.”

“Bad answer.”

“Honest answer.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

She looked at him.

“Would you still want me if I wasn’t the nurse who saved your life?”

Dominic considered it.

“I noticed you before I knew your name.”

“When?”

“Trauma bay.”

“I was covered in blood.”

“You told six armed men to move because they were blocking your oxygen cart.”

Grace smiled.

“They were.”

“That was when.”

Before either could move closer, Lucia appeared through the terrace door.

She looked apologetic.

“I swear this is important.”

Dominic groaned.

“What?”

“The prosecutors finished tracing the DeLuca trust.”

Grace’s heartbeat changed.

“And?”

Lucia smiled.

“It belongs to the living descendants.”

Dominic.

Lucia.

Rose.

Grace.

Nathan.

Millions stolen across decades would finally return.

But Lucia’s expression changed.

“There’s one condition in Sofia Moretti’s original trust.”

“What condition?”

She looked at Dominic.

“No beneficiary can receive distributions while participating in organized criminal activity.”

Dominic went silent.
