Chapter 10 - THE SIXTEENTH EXPERT

Cora became the person Cain auditors called when old records made no sense.

She hated title:

Consultant.

Loved hourly rate.

High.

Negotiated by her attorney.

Fifteen experts had failed to decode Patrick’s restaurant system.

Cora became sixteenth.

Not because she was magically smarter.

Because she understood context.

Menus.

Supply tickets.

Kitchen shorthand.

Her parents.

Numbers need language.

She had language.

Together they identified remaining fraud branches.

Most old.

Some current.

One current pattern shocked Wesley.

Cain Hospitality Services still used duplicated food vendors.

Small amounts.

Millions total over years.

History repeating.

Who ran division?

Rowan—the security chief?

No.

He had no financial role.

Current head:

Elliot Cain.

Wesley’s cousin.

Forty.

Wharton.

Clean reputation.

Cora examined invoices.

Same pattern.

Not Patrick’s exact code.

But product pairs always occurred on Tuesdays.

Why?

“Tuesday delivery discounts,” analyst said.

Cora frowned.

“No.”

She had restaurant experience.

Fish delivery Tuesdays?

Maybe.

Then looked at quantities.

12 lobsters.

8 olive oil cases.

3 flour.

12-8-3.

Next invoice:

4-16-9.

Letters?

L-H-C?

D-P-I?

Then she noticed suppliers’ street numbers.

Map coordinates?

No.

“Times.”

“What?”

12:08:03.

4:16:09.

Timestamp.

Each matched access logs to Cain warehouse system.

Someone embedded times of unauthorized database changes inside food quantities.

Whoever created invoices was leaving evidence.

Whistleblower.

Not thief.

Then initials on invoice preparer:

M.D.

Mara Donnelly?

No.

Employee:

Michael Donnelly.

Cora froze.

No known relative.

Who was he?

Personnel file.

Twenty-four years old.

Father:

Not listed.

Mother:

Anne Donnelly.

Cora had never heard.

Then photo.

He looked like Patrick.

Eyes.

Jaw.

Impossible.

Maybe cousin.

Then birth certificate investigation revealed Patrick’s younger brother, Samuel Donnelly, had a son.

Michael.

Cora had family.

A cousin.

Why unknown?

Thaddius isolated her from entire Donnelly side.

Told relatives she wanted no contact.

Told Cora they blamed her father.

Another lie.

Michael had joined Cain Hospitality deliberately after family stories about Patrick.

He noticed modern fraud.

Started leaving codes hoping historical investigators would see.

Nobody did.

Until Cora.

They met.

Michael stared at her.

“My dad has your picture.”

Cora cried.

Samuel Donnelly.

Alive.

Living in Vermont.

Why never find her?

He tried.

Thaddius returned letters.

Said Cora hated them.

At eighteen, Michael searched social media.

Cora used married surname then.

Lost trail.

Another theft.

Not money.

Family.

Then Michael revealed current thief.

Not Elliot.

Elliot’s deputy:

Lauren Vale.

Granddaughter of Charles Vale.

History repeating through surname.

But was she continuing grandfather’s scheme?

Evidence suggested yes.

Then Michael said something worse.

“Elliot knows.”

Wesley’s cousin knew and protected her.

Why?

Because Lauren had proof Elliot personally profited from a separate real-estate kickback.

Cain disease again.

Protect scandal.

Create larger scandal.

Wesley looked at Cora.

“I’m starting to hate my family.”

May you like

She answered:

“Get in line.”
