Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING SADIRA HID

Sadira refused to give up the recording.

At first.

“I kept you alive by keeping it hidden.”

Sadi sat across from her.

“Mom, hiding has not kept us out of this.”

Sadira looked exhausted.

Fair.

The recording was not in her apartment.

Not a bank box.

Not cloud storage.

She had mailed it twenty-five years earlier to someone she trusted.

A priest.

Father Thomas Keane.

He died ten years ago.

The package passed into church archives.

Sadi almost laughed.

Apparently every important piece of evidence in Boston lived in an archive.

They retrieved it under federal supervision.

Old cassette.

David Vale's voice.

Carlo's.

Then Lorenzo's.

Sadi listened.

David confronted Carlo about forced labor routes.

Carlo threatened him.

Lorenzo entered.

Argued with his brother.

Demanded the operation stop.

Then came the part nobody expected.

Carlo said:

“You think Isabella doesn't know where the money comes from?”

Roman went pale.

His mother again.

Lorenzo responded:

“Leave her out of this.”

Carlo laughed.

“She signed the foundation transfers.”

Isabella had unknowingly authorized charities receiving laundered money.

Carlo could implicate her.

That explained Lorenzo's silence.

He protected his wife.

Then Carlo threatened David directly.

Recording ended before murder.

Still powerful.

Enough to prove motive and conspiracy history.

Then Sadi heard another voice at the very end.

Faint.

Female.

“David?”

Sadira.

Her mother had been there.

Sadira had always claimed she wasn't.

Sadi turned.

“You were present.”

Sadira began crying.

“Yes.”

“Why lie?”

“Because you were inside me.”

She had been pregnant.

Carlo saw her.

Lorenzo got her out.

David stayed.

Hours later, he died.

Sadi understood her mother's guilt.

Then another detail emerged.

David said something before leaving:

Marcus has the duplicate.

Meaning Marcus Vale had possessed a second copy from the beginning.

Carlo knew.

That was why Marcus spent decades in danger.

Then federal agents called.

Arthur Bellini had been arrested at Logan Airport using a false passport.

He immediately requested a deal.

In exchange for immunity from murder charges?

Impossible.

But reduced sentencing?

Maybe.

His information:

Marcus Vale's death had been ordered by someone who believed the archive threatened Roman personally.

Not Lucia.

Not Carlo.

Not Lorenzo.

Isabella Moretti.

May you like

Roman's mother had ordered Marcus silenced.

Or so Arthur claimed.
