Chapter 8 - The Secret Beneath the Marble Staircase

Every Friday, I cleaned the antique grandfather clock beside the east staircase.
It stood nearly eight feet tall.
Dark mahogany.
Brass hands.
A beautiful porcelain face.
The clock hadn't worked since before I arrived at the estate.
But Vincent insisted it be polished weekly.
He said Adrian's father had loved it.
I'd never questioned why a broken clock mattered so much.
Until I read Dad's letter.
I stood before it with Adrian and a court-authorized investigator.
The clock's hands remained frozen at 4:17.
Adrian studied it.
"My father bought this in France."
I touched the wooden frame.
"Vincent always told me not to open the lower compartment."
Adrian's expression changed.
"Why?"
"He said the mechanism was fragile."
The investigator examined the cabinet.
Behind the lower panel was a narrow compartment.
Its lock had been concealed beneath decorative brass.
A small key lay taped inside the rear frame.
I stared at it.
Dad had always hidden spare keys where nobody expected.
The investigator documented everything before opening the compartment.
Inside was a black leather notebook.
My heart stopped.
The ledger.
Eleven years of fear.
My father's disappearance.
My mother's debts.
Matteo's supposed death.
Paolo's suspicious final hours.
All of it had led to one small book hidden inside a broken clock.
Adrian looked at me.
"Would you like to sit?"
I shook my head.
"No."
The investigator carefully turned the pages.
The entries were handwritten in French, Italian, and English.
Some contained numbers.
Others listed company names.
Several included the little black bird Dad drew beside important figures.
Then I noticed something.
Not every entry was financial.
Some were names.
Workers.
Dock supervisors.
Families.
People whose pension contributions had been diverted into companies controlled by Vincent and Lorenzo.
I swallowed.
"These are the people who lost their money."
The investigator nodded.
"Possibly. The records will need to be verified."
Adrian looked toward the pages.
His expression changed.
"My father's signature is here."
I nodded.
Then we reached a section labeled:
MARCHAND WORKERS' TRUST.
My grandfather's name appeared beneath the heading.
René Marchand had helped establish the original cooperative that financed part of the Marseille terminals.
The trust was supposed to protect employees' retirement savings and preserve their ownership interest.
Instead, shell companies had gradually stripped those rights away.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For years, he'd believed the port assets belonged entirely to his family.
Now the records suggested workers had been deprived of property they helped finance.
Then the investigator reached the final page.
A sealed envelope was tucked inside the back cover.
On it, Dad had written:
FOR ADRIAN VESCARI — WHEN HE FINALLY ASKS THE RIGHT QUESTION.
Adrian opened the copy provided after documentation.
Inside was a letter from Matteo.
Adrian,
If you're reading this, you've discovered what Father did.
But there's something you need to understand before you confront Vincent.
Adrian swallowed.
The next sentence made his face go white.
May you like
Vincent didn't simply help Father steal the port trust.
He arranged Father's death when Lorenzo decided to confess.
