Chapter 14 - THE CHILD NOBODY REMEMBERED

Inside Matteo Bellandi's bank deposit box were three things.

A handwritten confession.

A bundle of financial records.

And a photograph of a newborn baby.

Roman spread everything across his attorney's desk.

The records documented payments from Vincent Caruso to Harold Mercer, Eleanor Caruso, and Arthur Whitcomb.

They also showed that Giovanni Bellandi had eventually tried to reverse his agreement with the kidnappers.

He had secretly funded Matteo's investigation.

But before Matteo could bring Sofia home, he had been murdered.

Giovanni had then been threatened with the deaths of Teresa, Roman, and Sofia.

He'd remained silent.

It didn't excuse what he'd done.

But it explained why he'd spent his final years withdrawing from the criminal empire.

Roman opened the confession.

His father had written it shortly before his death.

I allowed fear to make me a coward. I told myself I was protecting my family when I was protecting the secrets that destroyed us.

Teresa read the letter silently.

When she finished, she folded it and placed it beside her wedding ring.

“I loved him,” she whispered. “But he was wrong.”

Roman nodded.

He wouldn't defend the indefensible.

Then he turned to the photograph.

The baby wore a white blanket embroidered with the initials N.B.

Norah stared.

“Those are my initials.”

Roman checked the date.

Thirty-two years earlier.

The day Norah Bennett had been born.

Beneath the photograph was a hospital document naming the child's biological mother.

Elena Bennett.

Norah whispered, “That's my mother.”

She had believed Elena died shortly after giving birth.

But Matteo's notes told another story.

Elena had worked as a young secretary in the Bellandi family offices.

She discovered suspicious payments involving Arthur Whitcomb and Vincent Caruso.

When she threatened to expose them, she disappeared.

Her newborn daughter was placed with a foster family under a falsified guardianship arrangement.

Norah pressed her hands against her face.

“All these years…”

Roman moved closer.

“You were connected to this long before the fire.”

Norah nodded slowly.

“That's why Arthur recognized my name.”

Another page revealed that Elena hadn't died.

She had survived an attack and spent years living under a protected identity after cooperating with federal authorities.

Roman immediately asked investigators to verify whether she was still alive.

Hours later, a federal agent called.

“Elena Bennett is alive,” he confirmed. “She has been searching for her daughter for decades.”

Norah began to cry.

Roman held her hand while the agent continued.

“She can meet Norah tomorrow.”

For a moment, Norah couldn't speak.

Then she noticed one final note inside Matteo's file.

A list of names.

Every person involved in the kidnapping conspiracy.

At the bottom, beneath Arthur, Vincent, Eleanor, and Mercer, was one additional name.

Vanessa Caruso.

Beside it, Matteo had written a chilling instruction.

Do not punish the child. She is another victim.

And Norah suddenly understood why Vanessa had hated her so fiercely.

May you like

Vanessa had known Norah's mother.

Because Elena Bennett had once saved Vanessa's life.
