Chapter 6 - THE TEN MILLION DOLLARS THAT NEVER EXISTED

Vanessa never intended to pay me ten million dollars.

That was the least surprising discovery.

The account she named during the engagement party contained less than twelve thousand.

Her promise had been theater.

A trap.

But after I survived the performance, something changed.

She panicked.

Security footage showed Vanessa entering the ballroom at 3:14 a.m.

Hours after the party.

She removed the golden silks herself.

Then left through a private garage.

I stared at the screen.

“Where did she take them?”

Vincent’s security chief looked uncomfortable.

“We traced her vehicle to Whitmore Tower.”

Charles’s headquarters.

Of course.

Detective Bennett obtained a search warrant based on financial-crime evidence already under investigation.

The silks were recovered.

Cut into pieces.

My heart sank when I saw them.

The fabric that once held me above hundreds of people lay shredded across an evidence table.

Rebecca reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.”

I swallowed.

“Can the data be recovered?”

A technician examined the reinforced seams.

Then smiled faintly.

“Possibly.”

Celeste had been smarter than everyone.

The microstorage strip wasn’t in one location.

She had divided it among four reinforced sections.

Vanessa destroyed two.

Two survived.

Enough to recover partial records.

Shipping manifests.

Payments.

Politicians.

Port officials.

Private security contractors.

And accounts linking Whitmore Maritime to illegal cargo movement.

Then one name appeared that made Vincent go silent.

Moretti Holdings.

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

Rebecca studied him.

“Your father did.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

His late father, Antonio Moretti, had partnered with Charles Whitmore years earlier.

Apparently, legitimate Moretti ships carried Whitmore cargo without inspecting every container.

Vincent inherited the contracts.

Maybe unknowingly.

Maybe not.

I looked at him.

“How much of your empire is clean?”

His eyes met mine.

“Not enough.”

I respected that answer more than a lie.

Then he did something nobody expected.

He told Detective Bennett:

“You can have the shipping records.”

His security chief turned pale.

“Boss—”

“All of them.”

Vincent looked at me.

“If my family profited from this, I want it exposed.”

That was the first moment I saw something beyond the Mafia king.

Not redemption.

Not yet.

But responsibility.

Then the recovered data revealed another file.

A payment.

Four years earlier.

Amount:

$50,000.

Recipient:

Henry Cole.

The payment originated from Vanessa.

We already knew that.

But the authorization code belonged to someone else.

V.M.

I stared at the initials.

Vincent Moretti.

My stomach dropped.

He went completely still.

“That wasn’t me.”

I looked at him.

“Can you prove it?”

He didn’t answer.

Then the technician opened the account details.

The authorization had come from Vincent’s private office.

On the exact day of my circus accident.

Long before he claimed he ever knew my name.
