Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO COULDN'T SPEAK

For three years, Norah had been told Leo could not communicate.
That turned out to be another lie.
Gabriel’s men recovered security footage from Mercy Ridge before Matteo’s people could erase it.
Leo’s right hand moved repeatedly.
Tap.
Pause.
Tap-tap.
Pause.
Three taps.
Norah leaned closer to the monitor.
“He does that all the time.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“What do the nurses say?”
“Muscle spasms.”
Elias replayed the footage.
“Those aren’t random.”
They called a neurologist Gabriel trusted.
The doctor watched three minutes.
Then said:
“He may be using a primitive yes-no code.”
Norah stopped breathing.
Within an hour, they accessed older videos from therapy sessions.
Leo’s fingers had been tapping for years.
Not spasms.
Letters.
Simple patterns.
He had been trying to communicate.
Norah covered her mouth.
“All this time?”
Gabriel felt something ugly twist inside him.
Someone had classified Leo as incapable of meaningful communication.
That made him easier to control.
Easier to silence.
Elias decoded the repeated sequence.
N.
O.
R.
A.
H.
Then another pattern.
B.
O.
X.
Norah looked confused.
“What box?”
Gabriel asked:
“Did Leo own a lockbox?”
“No.”
“Storage unit?”
“No.”
“Safe?”
She shook her head.
Then froze.
“Our mother.”
“What?”
“When she died, Leo kept one thing.”
Norah stood.
“A metal lunchbox.”
They drove to the storage unit where Norah kept the few possessions she had not sold.
The unit contained six boxes.
Clothes.
Photographs.
Christmas decorations.
At the back sat a faded blue metal lunchbox.
Norah opened it.
Inside were baseball cards.
A photograph of their mother.
A folded diner apron.
No flash drive.
Gabriel searched the lining.
Nothing.
Then Norah picked up the photograph.
The backing felt thick.
She tore it open.
A tiny USB drive fell into her palm.
Neither spoke.
Gabriel inserted it into an offline laptop.
Files appeared.
Bank transfers.
Port schedules.
Video.
And one audio recording.
Leo’s voice.
Before the crash.
“If you’re listening to this, something happened to me.”
Norah began crying silently.
Leo continued:
“Matteo Costa is stealing from Gabriel.”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“But Matteo isn’t the boss.”
Gabriel leaned closer.
“The person giving him orders works inside Gabriel’s office.”
Norah looked at him.
May you like
The recording named that person.
“Elias Ward.”
