Chapter 14 - The Empire He Left Behind

Three months later, Chicago was still recovering from the fall of Matteo Rossi.

Federal investigations had exposed bribed officials, fraudulent companies, and a network of financial crimes that stretched across several states. Several members of the old organization had been arrested. Others had surrendered their weapons and agreed to cooperate.

Dominic Rossi was no longer the unquestioned king of Chicago's underworld.

He had handed the legitimate businesses to an independent management team under Bee's supervision and entered a confidential cooperation agreement with federal authorities. He would still face consequences for crimes committed under his leadership, but his decision to expose the conspiracy had changed the course of the investigation.

Bee hadn't spoken to him since the warehouse.

She had moved into a modest apartment near the lake, where the windows filled with morning light and nobody guarded the entrance. She hired an attorney, learned the full extent of her inheritance, and began restructuring the companies into legal enterprises.

For the first time in her adult life, she made decisions without asking what Dominic would think.

Then a package arrived.

Inside was her old employee badge, the one she had left on Dominic's SUV in the rain.

Beneath it lay a handwritten note.

You were right about the convoy routes. You were right about Lorenzo. You were right about almost everything.

I was wrong about you.

I won't ask you to forgive me.

I only want you to know that the man you protected is trying to become someone who deserves the protection you gave him.

There was no signature.

Bee recognized the handwriting anyway.

That afternoon, she visited Michael at the rehabilitation center where he was recovering from his injuries. He looked healthier, though his hands still trembled when he became tired.

"You miss him," Michael said.

Bee pretended to examine a magazine.

"I miss the man I thought he was."

"Sometimes those are two different people."

"That doesn't mean I owe him another chance."

"No," Michael agreed. "It means you get to decide whether he deserves one."

A week later, Bee attended the opening of a new community center funded by the companies she now controlled. The center provided legal assistance, job training, and housing support for families affected by organized crime.

She stood near the entrance when a familiar voice spoke behind her.

"Your speech was impressive."

Dominic wore a simple charcoal suit without his old signet ring. He looked thinner, quieter, and strangely uncertain.

Bee studied him.

"You're not supposed to be here."

"I know."

"Then why did you come?"

He handed her a document.

It was the final report from the attorneys overseeing his cooperation agreement. Among the evidence was a sealed file containing the truth about the last night of her mother's life.

Bee opened it.

The report identified the person who had secretly warned Matteo about the meeting location.

It wasn't Dominic's father.

It wasn't Lorenzo's father.

It was someone who had supposedly died before Bee was born.

Her mother.

And the final page explained why she had made the call.
