Chapter 11 - The Brother in the Photograph

Elias drove until dawn, changing vehicles twice and abandoning every phone they had carried from the estate.

Maya barely spoke.

Antonio's words had left a wound neither of them knew how to touch.

"Your brother," Elias finally said. "The second child in the records. Adrian."

Maya stared through the window.

"Adrian is your brother. I'm your sister. But why would my mother hide me from all of you?"

"Because somebody was hunting the children."

"Or because your father was."

Elias accepted the accusation without defending himself.

They stopped at a secluded lakeside cabin owned by Marco's sister. There was no security system, no staff, and no internet connection. For the first time since the night of the storm, the silence felt almost safe.

Maya opened the metal box again.

Beneath the bank ledger lay a second photograph, one she hadn't noticed before.

It showed three children standing beside a woman in a garden.

Elias recognized himself immediately. He was about eight, wearing a striped shirt and looking furious at the camera.

The girl beside him was a baby.

The third child, a little boy with a crooked smile, held a toy soldier.

On the back, Isabella had written three names.

Elias.

Maya.

Michael.

Maya frowned.

"Who's Michael?"

Elias studied the boy's face.

"I don't know."

He called Marco using a secure line.

"Find out whether Antonio had another son named Michael."

Marco's reply came after several minutes.

"Boss, I found something. Michael Conti was declared dead at birth. But the hospital record has been altered twice."

Elias closed his eyes.

"Keep digging."

Marco continued.

"There's another detail. Adrian wasn't adopted by strangers. He was raised by Victor Raines under a different surname. Victor was his guardian, not just a family employee."

Maya went pale.

"Then Adrian has been planning this his entire life."

A car door slammed outside.

Elias reached for his weapon.

Marco entered alone, carrying a thick envelope.

"I found the original clinic records."

Inside were birth certificates, photographs, and a letter from Isabella to a lawyer.

If I cannot raise all three children safely, separate them. One must remain with Antonio, one with Elena, and one must disappear completely. Victor has threatened to kill them all unless I hand over the evidence.

Maya read the letter twice.

"She separated us to save us."

Elias looked at the photograph of the three children.

"Then where is Michael?"

Marco removed one final page.

It was a recent hospital admission form.

The patient's name was Michael Raines.

The emergency contact was Adrian Vale.

And the admission date was three days earlier.

Maya stared at the paper.

"He's alive."

Elias's phone buzzed.

A message appeared from Adrian.

Come alone to the old courthouse at noon. Bring Maya. If you want to meet the brother you forgot, don't bring your soldiers.

Then another message arrived.

Michael was alive—but a countdown in the corner of the photograph showed that his heart monitor had been disconnected.
