Chapter 1 - The Heat of the Iron

The searing, completely unbearable heat radiating aggressively from the smooth metal plate of the steaming household iron was absolutely terrifying and physically suffocating.
It hovered menacingly just mere inches from the incredibly sensitive, stretched skin of my heavily pregnant, eight-month belly as I sat trapped on the floor.
A single, heavy bead of cold sweat rolled slowly and agonizingly down my bruised temple as I stared completely paralyzed at the red indicator light glowing brightly like a demon's watchful eye.
Doña Victoria stood directly over my incredibly fragile body with a highly twisted, deeply malicious, and entirely unhinged smirk that completely distorted her usually elegant, high-society features.
Her perfectly manicured, highly expensive fingers gripped the white plastic handle of the steaming appliance with a terrifying, absolute strength that promised horrific, unimaginable violence.
She was flawlessly wearing a pristine, custom-tailored cream-colored tweed designer suit that actively made her look like a highly respectable, deeply moral matriarch of a wealthy, untouchable family.
But hiding completely unchecked beneath that highly expensive, beautifully crafted facade lived a cold-blooded, calculating monster who was entirely devoid of any basic human empathy or maternal compassion.
I was violently forced to sit on the incredibly cold, hard, and unforgiving imported marble floor of my own massive, luxurious kitchen without any physical support.
I was currently wearing absolutely nothing more than a simple, thin pink bikini top and a loose, highly revealing silk robe that offered completely zero protection against her violent attacks.
She had explicitly, aggressively demanded that I completely strip down my upper clothing so she could fully, entirely expose my highly vulnerable, deeply swollen eight-month baby bump to her physical threats.
Incredibly dark, agonizingly painful purple and sickly yellow bruises aggressively covered my pale chest, my fragile shoulders, and my bare legs from the highly intense weeks of her relentless physical abuse.
She had actively, meticulously turned my previously beautiful, deeply happy life into a completely inescapable, highly terrifying nightmare ever since the horrific military casualty letter first arrived in our mailbox.
That single, devastating piece of heavily forged paper had completely, violently, and permanently shattered my entire universe into a million unfixable, incredibly sharp pieces.
It stated incredibly clearly, with highly official bureaucratic language, that my deeply beloved husband, United States Army Captain Alejandro, had been tragically killed in action during a highly classified, incredibly dangerous overseas deployment.
I had completely spent the last three incredibly long, highly agonizing months slowly drowning in a massive, suffocating sea of completely unimaginable, profoundly soul-crushing grief.
I barely managed to eat enough basic food to keep my deeply exhausted body functioning, and I barely slept more than a few highly disturbed, incredibly terrifying hours each passing night.
I simply, barely existed in a complete state of total emotional numbness solely for the absolute sake of the innocent, unborn child currently growing and kicking inside my highly stressed womb.
Victoria actively, highly calculatingly used my immense, paralyzing sorrow as the absolute perfect, highly strategic opportunity to completely strike and entirely dismantle my independent life.
She aggressively moved all of her expensive designer luggage into our quiet suburban house under the completely false, highly manipulative pretense of lovingly helping a grieving, heavily traumatized widow navigate her dark tragedy.
Instead of providing comfort, she actively, completely isolated me from all of my lifelong friends, entirely confiscated my personal electronic devices, and literally locked the heavy front doors to completely cut me off from the outside world.
She wanted absolute, complete, and entirely undisputed legal control over Alejandro's unborn child, viewing my precious baby as her ultimate second chance to strictly raise a highly perfect, completely obedient family heir.
"Sign the highly official custody papers right this exact second, Elena, or I swear to God you both will violently burn," she whispered with a sickeningly sweet, incredibly toxic tone that made my blood run entirely cold.
She laughed an incredibly cold, highly sharp, and deeply psychotic laugh as she violently dropped a thick, highly organized stack of heavy legal documents directly onto the hard marble floor right beside my trembling knees.
They were incredibly carefully, highly meticulously forged legal papers explicitly designed by corrupt lawyers to completely, entirely, and permanently strip me of absolutely all of my natural maternal rights.
My highly exhausted vision began to violently blur and heavily darken at the extreme edges from a powerful mixture of sheer, unadulterated terror and complete, profound physical exhaustion.
I tried to desperately, highly frantically scramble backward on the incredibly smooth, slippery marble tiles to create even a single inch of safe distance between my baby and the burning heat.
But she aggressively stepped forward, her incredibly expensive, sharp designer high heels clicking loudly and sharply against the hard floor, completely trapping me in the tight corner of the large kitchen island.
The incredibly hot steam hissed loudly and aggressively from the water reservoir of the iron, completely filling the highly silent, incredibly tense room with a terrifying, deeply suffocating atmosphere of impending doom.
I wrapped both of my violently shaking, highly bruised hands incredibly protectively around my swollen stomach, silently, desperately praying to any listening god for a massive miracle to somehow save my innocent baby.
I tightly squeezed my exhausted, tear-filled eyes completely shut, heavily bracing my fragile body for the agonizing, incredibly horrific burning pain that I knew with absolute certainty was about to strike my skin.
I genuinely, deeply thought that my entire, highly tragic life was completely, utterly, and entirely over in that incredibly dark, highly terrifying moment of complete vulnerability.

I honestly thought I would absolutely never, ever see the beautiful, warm light of day or gently hold my precious, unborn baby in my loving arms again.
But the incredibly vast, highly mysterious universe had a vastly, incredibly different, and highly miraculous plan for me on that deeply fateful, incredibly terrifying suburban afternoon.
