Chapter 13 - MY MOTHER'S FINAL WARNING

I listened to the first twelve seconds seventeen times.

Mara, if you're hearing this, Tomas found you.

Nothing after it.

Tomas wanted the ledger in exchange for the complete recording.

Viktor refused immediately.

“No.”

“That's my mother's voice.”

“He wants you emotional.”

“I am emotional.”

“Exactly.”

I hated that he was right.

I hated even more that Mom had left words I might never hear.

Then Daniel quietly spoke.

“Why would Tomas keep the only copy on his phone?”

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel shrugged.

“He's a lawyer. Lawyers make copies of everything.”

That was the smartest thing anyone had said all night.

Pierce knew Tomas's document-storage company.

Viktor's investigators traced several archived files connected to my mother.

One contained the full audio.

We played it.

Mom sounded weak but clear.

She explained that Tomas had visited her hospital room pretending to represent Viktor.

He offered money for Ilona's remaining papers.

She refused.

Then he threatened to ruin my life financially after she died.

Suddenly, the mountain of unexplained collection claims made sense.

Some of my debt was real.

Some wasn't.

Tomas had purchased old accounts and buried me under legal notices, hoping desperation would eventually force me to sell Grandma's belongings or abandon the storage unit.

He had been waiting for the blue box to surface.

My hands shook.

Viktor's expression became terrifyingly still.

But Mom's recording wasn't finished.

“Viktor Kovacs does not know I am making this.”

I looked at him.

“If Mara ever meets Viktor, tell her not to judge him by his father's sins.”

Viktor looked away.

Mom continued.

“Ilona believed a family could change when one person finally chose to stop repeating what came before.”

Then came the final surprise.

Mom had sent copies of the ledger evidence to federal financial investigators months before her death.

Tomas couldn't bury the truth anymore.

The room relaxed for exactly three seconds.

Then Viktor's security chief entered.

“Tomas was just located.”

“Where?”

The man looked at me.

“Your apartment.”

A live security image appeared on his phone.

Tomas stood inside my bedroom holding the blue box we thought was still under guard.

And in his other hand was a match.
