Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Vittorio Russo had known Noelle would eventually become Henry Pierce's target.

His letter explained everything.

He had discovered the property trust.

He knew Elaine had disappeared.

And before his death, he created instructions that would guide Gabriel toward Noelle if Pierce ever began watching her again.

Gabriel read the letter twice.

"So even our first meeting wasn't completely chance."

Noelle leaned against the desk.

"Apparently your father was matchmaking from beyond the grave."

Gabriel gave her a look.

"That's what you took from this?"

"I'm emotionally exhausted."

He almost laughed.

Then the federal prosecutor called.

Henry Pierce had agreed to cooperate.

Not from remorse.

From fear.

Evidence now tied him to fraud, bribery, kidnapping, conspiracy, and multiple suspicious deaths.

In exchange for avoiding the harshest possible sentence, he began naming everyone involved.

Judges.

Developers.

Consultants.

Police officers.

Two state officials.

The story exploded across national media.

Hearthline's board resigned within twenty-four hours.

Donors demanded an independent investigation.

Derek survived surgery.

Chloe filed for divorce.

Three days later, Noelle received a call from Hearthline's interim board.

They wanted her back.

Founder.

Executive director.

Public face of the organization.

Everything Derek had stolen.

For thirty minutes, Noelle sat alone with the offer.

Then Gabriel arrived.

"What will you do?"

"I don't know."

"Yes, you do."

She looked at him.

"I built Hearthline."

"You did."

"I loved it."

"I know."

"But going back feels like proving something to Derek."

"Then don't go back for Derek."

"For what?"

Gabriel sat beside her.

"For the families you built it for."

That decided it.

Noelle accepted.

But on her terms.

New board.

Independent audits.

Transparent finances.

No Pierce involvement.

And a policy that no founder could ever control the charity alone again.

Three months later, Hearthline reopened its original housing program.

Noelle stood before cameras inside a renovated apartment building.

Gabriel watched from the back.

Afterward, she found him outside.

"You hid."

"I attended."

"You stood behind a concrete column."

"It was an excellent column."

She laughed.

Then he became serious.

"I need to tell you something."

Noelle groaned.

"If this is another secret relative, dead parent who isn't dead, hidden warehouse, or criminal conspiracy—"

"No."

"Good."

Gabriel reached into his coat.

Noelle stared at his hand.

"Gabriel."

He produced a key.

Not a ring.

She blinked.

"What is that?"

"My house."

"Why?"

"Because you said you wouldn't disappear into somebody else's life."

He placed the key in her palm.

"So I'm not asking you to move into mine."

She looked at him.

"I'm asking whether I can build one with you."

Noelle's eyes burned.

Before she could answer, a black sedan stopped across the street.

Marco got out.

His face was grim.

Gabriel immediately turned.

"What happened?"

Marco handed him a folder.

"Henry Pierce gave prosecutors one final name."

Gabriel opened it.

Noelle watched his expression change.

"Who?"

He looked at her.

"The person who ordered my father's death."

Noelle's breath caught.

Gabriel turned the page.

Then froze.

May you like

The name wasn't Henry Pierce.

It was Carlo Russo.
