Chapter 12 - THE LAST ORDER MY FATHER EVER GAVE

The old Carter estate stood outside Chicago behind iron gates and frozen trees.

I hadn't visited it since my father's funeral.

Now the man I'd buried five years earlier was waiting inside.

The authorities refused his demand that I come alone.

Instead, they arranged a controlled meeting.

My attorney attended.

Investigators monitored the conversation.

And for the first time, my father didn't get to decide the rules.

He sat inside the old library.

The fireplace burned behind him.

His face looked different.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Certain that everyone in the room belonged to him.

"Daniel."

My stomach tightened.

"Father."

He smiled.

"I wondered when you'd finally discover the truth."

I stared.

"You let me bury you."

He shrugged.

"It was necessary."

"You let me bury Michael."

His expression hardened.

"Your brother betrayed the family."

I felt something inside me snap.

"He wanted a normal life."

"He wanted to destroy everything we built."

I stepped closer.

"No."

My voice remained steady.

"He wanted to protect his wife and daughter."

My father's eyes narrowed.

"Elena filled his head with foolish ideas."

I stared.

"You ordered her killed."

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he leaned back.

"She knew too much."

The room went silent.

I looked at the man who'd raised me.

The man I'd spent my entire life trying to impress.

And for the first time, I saw him clearly.

Not as a powerful leader.

Not as the father whose approval I'd desperately wanted.

But as a man who'd chosen control over love again and again.

"You threatened Sofia," I said.

He shrugged.

"Children are effective leverage."

The words made my blood run cold.

I thought of the little girl with green eyes.

The one who gave her grandfather the larger piece of bread.

The one who asked whether I was the reason her mother cried.

I took a long breath.

"You're finished."

My father laughed.

"You think you can destroy me?"

I looked toward the investigators.

"I already gave them the records."

His smile disappeared.

"What?"

"Everything."

He stood.

"You foolish boy."

I didn't move.

"The accounts. The contracts. The hidden companies. All of it."

His face twisted.

"You're throwing away your inheritance."

I looked at him.

"No."

My voice softened.

"I'm finally choosing what matters."

For a moment, he stared at me.

Then he laughed bitterly.

"You think Elena will thank you? You think Michael will forgive you? You think giving away power makes you a good man?"

I looked down.

"No."

He blinked.

"I know it doesn't erase what I've done."

I raised my eyes.

"But it's where I start."

The investigators moved forward.

My father was taken into custody.

He didn't fight.

Not physically.

But he looked at me with hatred as they led him toward the door.

"Daniel!"

I turned.

He pointed at me.

"You'll regret this."

I watched him.

Then answered quietly:

"The only thing I regret is how long it took me to stop being afraid of you."

The door closed.

For the first time in my life, my father's voice no longer controlled the room.

But as I turned to leave, my attorney approached.

His expression was serious.

"Daniel, there's something you should know."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Your father left a sealed trust document."

I frowned.

"For whom?"

The attorney hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

"Sofia Carter."
