Chapter 11 - THE SON MICHAEL HID

Emma had a brother seven years older.

Jonathan Hayes.

She remembered a boy from childhood photographs.

She had always been told he was a cousin who died young.

Another family lie.

Jonathan had seen too much.

At seventeen, he witnessed William threatening Michael inside the restaurant office.

After Rose disappeared, Michael sent Jonathan away for protection.

Different name.

Different state.

No contact.

Emma felt furious.

“Everyone protected me by removing themselves from my life.”

Rose lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Do you understand how insane that sounds?”

“Yes.”

“Dad died. You disappeared. My brother disappeared. And I spent eighteen years believing nobody came back because there was nobody left.”

Rose cried silently.

Emma continued:

“I would rather have been afraid with the truth.”

“I know that now.”

“Where is Jonathan?”

“Chicago.”

“Does he know about me?”

“Yes.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“Why didn’t he contact me?”

“He tried once.”

“When?”

“Your twenty-fifth birthday.”

Emma remembered.

A man had called from an unknown number.

She answered.

He asked whether she was Emma Hayes.

Before he could explain, Derek entered the room and she hung up.

Derek.

Again.

Rose said:

“Jonathan saw Derek in a photograph you posted afterward.”

“What did he do?”

“He contacted me.”

“And?”

“We decided William might be watching.”

“So everyone disappeared again.”

“Yes.”

Emma sat back.

She felt exhausted by other people’s fear.

“Call him.”

Rose looked stunned.

“Now?”

“Now.”

Jonathan answered after two rings.

Rose put the phone on speaker.

“Mom?”

Emma’s chest tightened.

Rose said:

“Someone wants to talk to you.”

Silence.

Then Emma spoke.

“Hi.”

A sharp breath came through the phone.

“Emma?”

She started crying.

He did too.

Nothing eloquent followed.

Just years collapsing into broken sentences.

Are you okay?

I’m sorry.

I should have called.

I thought you were dead.

I know.

I’m sorry.

Eventually Jonathan asked:

“Is the baby okay?”

Emma smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

“What’s her name?”

Emma froze.

She had not officially chosen one.

Derek wanted Olivia.

Emma had liked Grace.

Now neither felt right.

“I’m still deciding.”

Jonathan laughed softly.

“Sounds like you.”

She didn’t even know what that meant.

But she wanted to.

They planned to meet the next day.

Then Luca entered quietly.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.”

Emma ended the call.

“What happened?”

“Derek is talking.”

Her expression hardened.

“To police?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He claims William has been moving money out of Morrison Financial for months.”

“So?”

“The destination is connected to a private security company.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“Why does that matter?”

Rose stood.

“What company?”

Luca looked at her.

“Black Ridge Protective Services.”

Rose went pale.

Emma noticed.

“You know it.”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

Rose whispered:

“The men who helped stage my death worked for Black Ridge.”

Silence.

Luca continued:

“They also provided security at Michael’s construction site the morning he died.”

Emma felt cold.

William’s financial crimes and her father’s death were no longer separate.

Then Luca said:

“Black Ridge received a new payment yesterday.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

“For what?”

“We don’t know.”

Rose suddenly looked toward the nursery photograph on Emma’s phone.

“No.”

Emma’s heart raced.

“What?”

Rose grabbed her coat.

“William never makes a payment without assigning a purpose.”

Luca asked:

“What purpose would he have now?”

Rose looked directly at Emma.

“To remove the beneficiary before the trust challenge fails.”

Emma’s hand went protectively toward her abdomen even though her daughter was not there.

Then her phone rang.

Hospital.

Emma answered.

A nurse’s terrified voice came through.

“Ms. Hayes, someone just tried to enter the nursery using a physician badge.”

Emma stopped breathing.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Safe.”

Emma closed her eyes.

The nurse continued:

“Security stopped him.”

“Who was he?”

Pause.

“He says his name is Samuel Keene.”

May you like

The doctor Derek and William had already used.

And he had come back for her baby.
