Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DISAPPEAR

For twenty-four hours after reading the insurance documents, I couldn't sleep.

Every sound outside Olivia's townhouse made me jump.

A car door closing.

Footsteps on the sidewalk.

A phone vibrating unexpectedly.

I hated that fear had followed me out of my marriage.

I'd left Vincent because I wanted freedom.

Instead, I was hiding from people who believed my life was worth less than a corporate merger.

Then Olivia found me sitting at the kitchen table at three in the morning.

"Claire?"

I looked up.

"I don't want to live like this."

She pulled out a chair.

"Then we make a plan."

I swallowed.

"What kind of plan?"

"One that belongs to you."

The next morning, Rachel helped me arrange temporary protection while the investigators pursued the threats.

We also secured my financial accounts and challenged the fraudulent ownership documents.

Then I made a decision.

I would no longer let other people describe me as a helpless woman.

I would tell the truth.

Not to reporters.

Not on social media.

But in a sworn statement to investigators.

I documented everything.

The hospital call.

Vincent's response.

The accident.

The attempts to control my inheritance.

The forged medical documents.

And the threats that followed.

For the first time, I spoke without apologizing.

Detective Bell listened carefully.

When I finished, he closed his notebook.

"Mrs. Moretti, you've provided important information."

I nodded.

"Please call me Claire."

He smiled faintly.

"All right, Claire."

That afternoon, investigators searched a warehouse connected to Anthony's holding company.

They recovered financial records, transportation schedules, and communications related to my movements.

The delivery driver was located in Indiana.

He agreed to cooperate.

According to his initial statement, he'd been instructed to cause a collision that would prevent me from attending the shareholder meeting.

He claimed he hadn't been told I was pregnant.

He also claimed Vanessa had been present when the instructions were discussed.

My hands shook when Rachel explained.

"Does this mean they'll arrest her?"

"The prosecutors are reviewing the evidence."

I nodded.

Then Rachel added something unexpected.

"The driver says he was given a photograph of your car."

My stomach tightened.

"Who took it?"

She turned her laptop toward me.

The photograph showed my car parked outside our mansion.

The angle was familiar.

Taken from the second-floor balcony.

I knew that balcony.

It was attached to Vincent's private study.

I stared.

"Vanessa had access to that room."

Rachel nodded.

"But she wasn't the only one."

My heart began pounding.

Then she showed me the timestamp.

11:42 p.m.

The night before my accident.

Vincent was supposed to be in New York on business.

But the building's security records showed his private elevator arriving at 11:36.

My stomach turned.

He had returned home without telling me.

And someone had photographed my car minutes later.

Then Rachel said:

May you like

"Claire, we need to establish whether Vincent knew what was going to happen."

For the first time since leaving him, I was truly afraid of the answer.
