Chapter 9 - LILY'S MOTHER

Rachel Quinn was alive.

And Lily knew the moment she saw her.

Not because she remembered her.

She had been an infant.

But because they had the same eyes.

Gray-blue.

Almost silver beneath bright light.

Mrs. Gable entered the safe interview room and stopped.

Rachel stood near the wall.

Tall.

Dark hair cut short.

No jewelry.

No makeup.

The posture of someone who automatically watched doors.

Lily sat at the table.

Silent.

Mrs. Gable moved beside her.

Rachel’s expression broke when she saw the nanny.

“You’re Margaret.”

Mrs. Gable tightened her jaw.

“You know my name.”

“Arthur told me about you.”

“When?”

“Over the years.”

Mrs. Gable felt anger rise.

“You spoke to Arthur?”

“Yes.”

“Did Lily know?”

“No.”

“Did Clara?”

“No.”

Lily finally spoke.

“You’re my mom?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Lily’s face remained still.

Children sometimes looked most frightened when they stopped crying.

“Why did you leave me?”

Rachel sat carefully.

“Because men were trying to kill me.”

“They tried to kill me too.”

The sentence destroyed her.

Rachel’s hand flew to her mouth.

“I know.”

“No.”

Lily’s voice shook.

“You didn’t know because you weren’t there.”

Mrs. Gable closed her eyes.

Rachel cried silently.

Lily continued.

“Mrs. Gable was there.”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

“She stayed when I had nightmares.”

“Yes.”

“She took me to school.”

“Yes.”

“She got arrested because people wanted me.”

Rachel whispered:

“I know.”

Lily stared at her.

“You’re my mother.”

“Yes.”

“But she’s my mom too.”

Mrs. Gable could not breathe.

Rachel looked at Mrs. Gable.

Then nodded.

“She is.”

No fight.

No jealousy.

That made Mrs. Gable cry harder.

Detective Brooks entered after giving them several minutes.

“We need answers.”

Rachel’s entire posture changed.

Federal marshal again.

Even after eight years hiding.

She explained that Senator Voss had been under investigation for bribery long before Arthur publicly accused him.

Rachel worked undercover through a contracting firm.

She discovered payments linking Voss to Julian Sterling and several judges.

Then she met Arthur.

They began a relationship.

Lily was born.

Rachel planned to testify.

Someone leaked her identity.

A car bomb killed another marshal in a vehicle everyone believed Rachel occupied.

The government declared her dead publicly.

Arthur agreed to raise Lily.

Later he married Clara.

“Did Clara know?” Mrs. Gable asked.

“She knew Lily wasn’t biologically hers.”

“Did she know who you were?”

“No.”

“Why come back now?”

Rachel looked at Lily.

“Because the recording reached national news.”

“So?”

“Voss knows Lily heard his voice.”

Mrs. Gable’s stomach tightened.

“He already knew she was your daughter?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Not necessarily.”

“Then who did?”

“That is what frightens me.”

Brooks leaned forward.

“The rare toxin.”

Rachel nodded.

“I recognize it.”

Mrs. Gable stared.

“What is it?”

“A compound used in an old intelligence poisoning case.”

“Who had access?”

Rachel’s expression turned dark.

“Very few people.”

“Names.”

“One was a federal toxicology consultant named Dr. Samuel Kline.”

Brooks began typing.

“And?”

Rachel swallowed.

“Another was my former handler.”

“Name?”

Rachel looked toward Lily.

“Victor Dane.”

Mrs. Gable frowned.

“Arthur knew him?”

Rachel nodded.

“Arthur trusted him completely.”

Mrs. Gable remembered the video.

The person Arthur trusted most.

Julian had said the same thing.

Brooks searched the name.

Nothing.

Then her face changed.

“Victor Dane died ten years ago.”

Rachel laughed once.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he sent me a message last month.”

Mrs. Gable felt cold.

“What did it say?”

Rachel took out a folded paper.

Three words.

COME HOME, RACHEL.

Lily stared.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor was the man who arranged my disappearance.”

Brooks looked up.

“That sounds like someone you should trust.”

Rachel’s face hardened.

“He was.”

“Was?”

Rachel nodded.

“Until Arthur told me he discovered Victor had been selling protected witness identities.”

Nobody spoke.

Mrs. Gable’s stomach dropped.

“Lily.”

Rachel nodded.

“If Victor sold my location, he may have sold hers.”

Brooks immediately ordered security doubled.

Too late.

The building alarm sounded.

Not fire.

Security breach.

A marshal rushed inside.

“Lockdown!”

Mrs. Gable grabbed Lily.

Rachel drew a weapon.

“What happened?”

The marshal’s radio exploded with voices.

“Unauthorized access, lower garage.”

“Vehicle?”

“Black SUV.”

Rachel went pale.

“Victor.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he always used black SUVs.”

Mrs. Gable almost laughed from terror.

“That describes half of Boston.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed toward the security monitor.

A man had stepped out.

Gray hair.

Navy overcoat.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then lifted one hand.

A Sterling signet ring gleamed on his finger.

Mrs. Gable froze.

Arthur wore the same ring.

So did Julian.

The man smiled.

Rachel whispered:

“That’s Victor.”

Brooks stared.

“He looks familiar.”

Rachel looked at her.

“You’ve seen him.”

“Where?”

Mrs. Gable knew first.

The courtroom.

First row.

Behind Clara.

A quiet older man had sat there every day of Mrs. Gable’s trial.

Never speaking.

Never attracting attention.

Mrs. Gable had assumed he was a reporter.

Rachel whispered:

“He watched the entire case.”

Lily tightened her grip on Mrs. Gable’s hand.

Then a message appeared on the security monitor.

Typed remotely across the screen.
