Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL OF THE SYNDICATE

Six months later, the historical federal trial of United States v. Sterling Veyra, Margaret Veyra, and Eleanor Veyra-Cross reached its swift, devastating conclusion.
The trial was covered extensively by international news outlets.
The unassailable mountain of forensic digital evidence, satellite wiretaps, Swiss banking ledgers, and physical testimony left the defense entirely helpless.
On a bright, clear morning in early April, Judge Katherine Mercer delivered the final sentences inside a packed federal courtroom.
At the defense table sat Sterling, Margaret, and Eleanor Cross.
They wore dark green federal inmate jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound by heavy iron chains.
Months spent in maximum-security pre-trial isolation had stripped away their vanity, leaving them looking frail, hollowed-out, and thoroughly defeated.
I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Caroline and fourteen-year-old Maya.
Maya wore a simple dark blue dress, her dark hair neatly styled, her posture erect and confident.
Beside us sat Marcus Vance, Agent David Miller, and Cameron Veyra, who had testified truthfully for the prosecution regarding VeyraTech’s legacy infrastructure.
Judge Mercer slammed her heavy wooden gavel down, restoring absolute silence to the gallery.
“We are gathered today for sentencing,” Judge Mercer declared sternly, her razor-sharp gaze sweeping over the defense table.
“Over the course of this trial, this court has witnessed an appalling display of multi-generational sociopathic greed, corporate human exploitation, and an absolute disregard for human dignity.”
She fixed her gaze onto Sterling Veyra first.
“Sterling Veyra,” Judge Mercer thundered. “You operated a shadow enterprise that treated human lives, women’s bodies, and children as commercial commodities to be locked in basements for financial profit.”
“I sentence you to four consecutive life terms in federal custody at ADX Florence, without the possibility of parole.”
Sterling bowed his head, saying nothing as marshals tightened his chains.
“Margaret Veyra,” Judge Mercer continued, turning her cold gaze onto the former matriarch. “For your leadership role in RICO racketeering, illegal confinement, and corporate fraud, I sentence you to an additional twenty-five years in federal prison.”
“Eleanor Veyra-Cross,” the judge concluded. “For your direct participation in child endangerment and illegal confinement, you are sentenced to twenty years in federal custody.”
The heavy wooden gavel struck the block with a thunderous CRACK.
Court marshals immediately grabbed the chains attached to all three prisoners, marching them out through the side doors toward the holding cells.
As Margaret was dragged away, she turned her head toward our row one last time, looking at Caroline and me through a blur of desperate tears.

Neither Caroline nor I turned away.
We met her gaze with total, serene, and absolute silence, watching the heavy steel door close behind her forever.
