Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FOR HER CHILDREN

:
My mother looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
I couldn't move.
“Mom?”
She started crying.
I ran to her.
For the first time in my life, I remembered the feel of her arms around me.
“I'm sorry.”
I held her tighter.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you come for me?”
“I tried.”
My heart broke.
“I tried for twenty-eight years.”
She looked at Dominic.
“I'm sorry.”
He stepped closer.
“You let me believe my sister was dead.”
“I was trying to protect her.”
“And Nathaniel?”
She looked at him.
“I thought he died.”
Nathaniel stared.
“You were my mother?”
“No.”
She touched his face.
“Your mother was my sister.”
Silence.
I finally understood.
Nathaniel was my cousin.
Not my brother.
My grandmother had manipulated everyone.
Cassandra's revelations had been another layer of the lie.
My mother's sister had been married to Marcus Sterling.
They had Nathaniel.
When the family discovered the inheritance, my grandmother ordered the fire.
My mother escaped with me.
Nathaniel was taken.
Dominic's supposed sister was me.
Nathaniel was the missing heir from the second branch.
The family tree was far more tangled than anyone knew.
My grandmother had fabricated relationships for decades.
Dominic looked at my mother.
“Why did she want Sophia?”
“Because Sophia is the only heir she couldn't control.”
My mother looked at me.
“She thought if you were raised poor, you'd be easier to manipulate.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Instead, I became a maid.”
My mother smiled through tears.
“And survived.”
Then the ballroom doors exploded.
My grandmother entered with four armed men.
“Enough.”
Dominic moved in front of us.
“You've lost.”
“No.”
She pointed at me.
“She hasn't.”
I looked at her.
“What do you want?”
“The locket.”
I touched it.
“Why?”
“It contains the final key.”
I frowned.
“You said the trust was transferred.”
“It was.”
She smiled.
“But you didn't activate the final clause.”
My mother went pale.
“What clause?”
My grandmother laughed.
“The one that decides who inherits the family name.”
I looked at the locket.
It began to glow beneath the ballroom lights.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The silver back opened.
Inside was a tiny folded document.
My father's signature.
And one sentence.
Sophia shall inherit only if she rejects the Sterling empire.
I looked at Dominic.
Then at Nathaniel.
My grandmother's face changed.
She realized what I'd done.
I had already rejected it.
The criminal empire was gone.
The legitimate trust remained.
She had lost everything.
One of her guards lowered his weapon.
Then another.
My grandmother stared.
“Do you think this ends here?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“You don't understand family.”
I answered:
“No.”
“I understand love.”
Dominic stepped beside me.
“So do we.”
Federal agents stormed the ballroom.
My grandmother was arrested.
For the first time in twenty-eight years, the Sterling family was free.
But one person remained missing.
Cassandra.
She had vanished during the chaos.
A note was left on the floor.
I owe Sophia a debt.
Then another line.
And someone else still knows where your father is.
My mother looked at me.
“Your father?”
I stared.
My mother's expression broke.
“He wasn't killed in the accident.”
May you like
I felt the room spin.
My father was alive.
