Chapter 6 - The Crumbling Illusion

The metallic click of handcuffs closing around Darren’s wrists sounded like a thunderclap in the silent office suite.

“Get your hands off me!” Darren roared, struggling against the two officers as they forced his arms behind his back. “Leah, tell them to stop! Mom! Call a lawyer!”

“Mr. Ellison is a lawyer, Darren,” I said quietly, watching him from my chair. “And he’s currently representing the estate you tried to rob.”

“You set me up!” Darren screamed, his hair messy, his face contorted in frantic, ugly rage as the officers dragged him down the carpeted hallway toward the elevators. “You planned this whole thing! You witch! You ruined my life!”

“You ruined your own life the moment you put a price tag on Grandma’s heart,” I called after him as the elevator doors slid open.

His screaming faded as the elevator descended, leaving our family alone in the quiet conference room.

My aunt broke down into heavy, uncontrollable sobs. My mother sat beside me, squeezing my hand so tightly her knuckles turned white, her head resting against my shoulder.

“Leah...” Mom whimpered softly. “How long... how long did you know?”

“Grandma told me three months ago,” I confessed softly. “When she found out about the pill tampering, she didn’t want to believe it at first. She cried in my arms for three days. But Grandma wasn’t weak, Mom. She refused to let Darren destroy this family’s legacy.”

Mr. Ellison placed a gentle hand on the stack of files. “Your grandmother was one of the sharpest clients I’ve ever had the honor of serving, Leah. She wanted Darren to expose himself in front of the entire family today so there would be no doubts, no hidden sympathies, and no lingering guilt.”

He handed me a small brass key attached to a blue ribbon.

“This is for the master lock on the floorboards inside the farmhouse pantry,” Mr. Ellison said with a faint, respectful smile. “Your grandmother left something else for you. Something she wanted you to open only when Darren was safely behind bars.”
