Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Alexander Vale entered without knocking.
Robert followed.
Grace remained between them.
Nolan moved toward her.
Alexander raised one hand.
“Don’t.”
Grant’s weapon was already drawn.
So were two guns behind Alexander.
The room became a standoff.
Eli stared at Grace.
She looked at him.
Neither had ever met.
Yet something passed between them.
Recognition without history.
Brother.
Sister.
Robert looked at Schedule C.
His face changed.
“So Rachel kept it.”
Eli stepped in front of the backpack.
“Don’t touch it.”
Robert almost smiled.
“You sound like your mother.”
Eli’s jaw tightened.
Alexander looked at Nolan.
“You’re Camille’s husband.”
“Yes.”
“You were not supposed to be involved.”
Nolan laughed bitterly.
“Apparently that was everybody’s favorite plan.”
Grace whispered:
“Nolan?”
He looked at her.
She knew him.
Camille must have shown photographs.
“Did Camille tell you about me?”
Grace nodded.
“She said if anything happened, you were the only adult I could trust.”
That broke something inside him.
Camille had trusted him.
Just not in time.
Alexander tightened his grip on Grace’s shoulder.
She flinched.
Nolan noticed.
“Take your hand off her.”
Alexander looked amused.
“She’s my daughter.”
“That doesn’t make her property.”
Robert laughed once.
“Now you understand this family.”
Alexander glared at him.
Nolan looked between them.
“You’re enemies.”
Robert answered:
“Always.”
“Then why arrive together?”
Grace said:
“Because they both want the paper.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“Grace.”
She stopped.
Nolan understood.
They had formed a temporary alliance to recover Schedule C.
Then destroy each other later.
“What happens if Grace and Ivy are formally verified together?”
Robert said nothing.
Alexander did.
“The trust reopens.”
“And?”
“All transactions since Theodore’s death face review.”
Nolan looked at Robert.
“How much did you steal?”
Robert’s face hardened.
“Nothing.”
Alexander laughed.
“Three hundred million minimum.”
Robert turned.
“You’re one to talk.”
Alexander smiled.
“I never pretended to be a trustee.”
Lowell whispered:
“Enough.”
Everyone looked at him.
The old attorney held up a document.
“You’re both missing the final clause.”
Robert went pale.
Alexander’s smile vanished.
Nolan stared.
“What final clause?”
Lowell read:
Upon activation, trustee authority transfers temporarily to the independent protector named herein pending beneficiary majority review.
“Who is the protector?”
Lowell looked at Nolan.
No.
Nolan felt dread immediately.
Lowell continued:
“Camille Vale.”
Silence.
Robert whispered:
“She’s dead.”
Lowell nodded.
“Which triggers the successor protector.”
Alexander looked furious.
“Who?”
Lowell turned the page.
“Nolan Pierce.”
Nolan stopped breathing.
“What?”
Camille had made him successor protector.
Without telling him.
Meaning if Grace and Ivy were verified together, Nolan—not Robert, not Alexander—would temporarily control the trust review.
Robert stared at him with something close to hatred.
Alexander whispered:
“So that’s why Camille married him.”
Nolan’s anger exploded.
“No.”
Alexander smiled coldly.
“You think she chose you randomly?”
Nolan moved toward him.
Grant blocked the path.
Alexander continued.
“Camille needed someone outside the Vale family.”
“You don’t know anything about our marriage.”
“I know Theodore’s plan.”
Nolan froze.
“Theodore died before Camille met me.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you saying?”
Alexander looked at Lowell.
Lowell’s face went pale.
Nolan saw it.
“You know.”
Lowell shook his head.
“I won’t.”
Alexander laughed.
“You’ve protected this long enough.”
Robert snapped:
“Leave it.”
Interesting.
Both men feared the same thing.
Nolan stepped toward Lowell.
“What don’t I know?”
The old man looked at Ivy.
Then at Nolan.
Finally:
“Your marriage to Camille was not arranged.”
Nolan exhaled.
Good.
Then Lowell added:
“But your meeting was.”
Nolan froze.
“What?”
Camille and Nolan had met eight years earlier at a hospital charity event.
He attended because a client canceled dinner.
She volunteered through her school.
Random.
Or so he believed.
“Who arranged it?”
Lowell whispered:
“Theodore.”
“That’s impossible. He was dead.”
Lowell looked shattered.
“No.”
The room went silent.
Nolan felt every previous lie rearrange.
“Theodore Vale is alive?”
Robert closed his eyes.
Alexander looked furious.
Lowell nodded.
“He survived the balcony fall.”
Nolan stared.
“Then whose funeral did the family hold?”
Lowell answered:
“No body was ever shown publicly.”
Of course.
Always the same trick.
“Where is he?”
“No one knew for years.”
Alexander said:
“I did.”
Robert turned toward him.
“You liar.”
Alexander ignored him.
Nolan demanded:
“Where?”
Alexander smiled without warmth.
“Camille found him six years ago.”
Nolan stopped breathing.
During their marriage.
His wife had found her supposedly dead father and said nothing.
Then Grace whispered:
“He’s in Boston.”
Nolan looked at her.
May you like
“How do you know?”
“Because he was with Camille the night before she died.”
