Chapter 4 - VIVIENNE’S LAST LIE

Vivienne disappeared from estate the following morning.
Security camera showed her leaving through staff entrance at 4:18 a.m.
No car.
No luggage except handbag.
Marco found note.
I know where my father kept Luca’s original file. If I tell you first, he will destroy it.
Underneath:
Please trust me once.
I did not.
I called Detective Ruiz.
She swore.
Then tracked Vivienne’s phone.
Manhattan.
Vale Foundation headquarters.
Police moved.
By time we arrived, fire alarm screaming.
Employees poured sidewalk.
Smoke came from executive archive.
Vivienne stood outside coughing, clutching metal document case.
Arthur’s security director chased.
Police arrested him after he grabbed her.
The fire was contained.
Vivienne handed Ruiz case.
Inside:
Original trust ledgers.
Luca’s notes.
Samuel’s payments.
And letter from Arthur to Vincent discussing “Palermo correction.”
Enough.
Vivienne had known location for years.
“Why wait?” I asked.
She looked exhausted.
“Because he’s my father.”
There was family curse in four words.
“And Sofia?”
“I warned her.”
“When?”
“Two weeks before she died.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“She didn't trust you.”
I looked away.
“Because of transfers?”
“Yes.”
“She thought you were part of it.”
“And you knew I wasn't.”
“I suspected.”
“Not enough?”
Vivienne cried.
“I was afraid if I chose wrong, my father would destroy me.”
“So you let Sofia choose alone.”
“Yes.”
Honesty hurt.
Then she confessed ring truth.
She did not find after Sofia died accidentally.
Arthur ordered her retrieve it.
The ring contained hidden microfilm? Better not. It was paternity evidence symbolic, but why important? Luca had engraved star, matching ring found among his possessions plus photo. Arthur believed destroying personal links weakened case, though DNA stronger.
Vivienne entered Sofia’s room with Samuel after death.
She found ring on bedside table.
Took.
But she did not give Arthur.
“Why wear it?”
“I don't know.”
“Yes, you do.”
She whispered:
“I wanted someone to stop me.”
That was painful.
She wore stolen ring at engagement dinner hoping guilt? Maybe unconscious, but weak. Better: she intentionally wore it to force truth without confessing.
“I knew Rosie might recognize it.”
“You used three-year-old child to confess for you?”
Her tears fell.
“Yes.”
I stared.
Cowardly.
But it worked.
“You could have told me.”
“I was terrified.”
“Sofia was terrified too.”
“I know.”
“She still recorded truth.”
Vivienne had no defense.
Our engagement remained over.
But she agreed testify.
Arthur called from detention through lawyer? no direct.
His attorneys attacked daughter publicly.
Claimed drug abuse, emotional instability.
Vivienne released records proving father had financially controlled her since college.
Not excuse.
Context.
She accepted accessory/evidence tampering charges, cooperating for reduced sentence.
No clean redemption.
She had helped search dead woman’s room.
She stole property.
She stayed silent.
She also ultimately exposed father.
People can be both.
Rosie taught later.
Then original files revealed final horror.
Arthur had maintained a private list titled:
CONTINGENCIES.
Names.
Financial exposure.
Pressure points.
Medical vulnerabilities.
Family secrets.
Sofia’s entry:
Child - Luca Bellini. Trust exposure. Emotional leverage: Rosie.
My niece listed as leverage.
My name:
Damian - guilt over Luca. Control through Vivienne marriage.
Marriage.
I stared.
Engagement itself part strategy.
Arthur encouraged daughter relationship with me to secure influence over Bellini trust.
Vivienne admitted.
“At beginning.”
“How beginning?”
“He suggested I reconnect with you.”
“So all fake?”
“No.”
I laughed without humor.
“Don't.”
“I did fall in love with you.”
“After assignment?”
She flinched.
“Yes.”
That was not foundation I could live on.
Another entry:
Carlo - resentment of Damian. Useful.
My uncle Carlo had been feeding Arthur internal business information.
Family betrayal spread.
Carlo fled before questioning.
Found at airport.
Arrested on financial conspiracy, later tied to Luca planning? Evidence showed he knew Vincent planned “stop” Luca but claimed didn't know bombing.
Did he warn Luca?
No.
Cowardice again.
At preliminary hearing, I saw Carlo.
He whispered:
“Blood should matter.”
I answered:
“It did to Sofia.”
He looked away.
Then investigators found final audio on Sofia flash drive.
Recorded day she collapsed.
Samuel entered staff kitchen.
His voice:
“You need to take your new medication.”
Sofia:
“I stopped it.”
“You cannot.”
“It makes me dizzy.”
“That's normal.”
“No.”
Then Arthur’s voice entered.
He was there.
“You're becoming difficult.”
Sofia:
“I'm giving documents to Damian tonight.”
Arthur:
“He won't believe you.”
“I have proof.”
“He'll believe family before maid.”
Silence.
Then Sofia said:
“That's what you're counting on.”
Arthur:
“Yes.”
Those words destroyed defense more than threat.
He understood class hierarchy.
Expected me to dismiss her.
Maybe I would have?
I hate question.
Then sound of glass.
Samuel:
“Drink.”
Sofia:
“No.”
Recording ended.
Investigators determined anticoagulant was likely dissolved into wellness drink Samuel gave her later under medical pretense.
Sofia collapsed next morning.
Arthur didn't strike.
Samuel didn't intend? Jury would decide.
But they knowingly endangered.
They counted on her status making death invisible.
They almost succeeded.
Until Rosie saw ring.
At night I sat beside niece.
She was coloring stars.
“Why stars?”
“Mommy liked them.”
“Did she?”
“She said Daddy called me little star.”
My chest tightened.
Luca.
I looked at ring now returned temporarily as evidence photo only, actual held by police.
“Rosie.”
“Yes?”
“Your mom was very brave.”
She frowned.
“She was scared.”
“People can be both.”
Rosie nodded.
Then:
“Are you scared?”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
I looked at her.
“Getting this wrong.”
She returned coloring.
“Mommy says try again.”
May you like
Simple.
So I did.
