Chapter 8 - BOX 314

The bank opened at nine.

We were there at eight fifty-two.

Luca insisted on coming.

So did my mother.

Adrian waited outside with Marco because his legal status after seven years under false identities was complicated enough without walking into a bank surrounded by Moretti security.

The manager inspected my identification.

Then the key.

Then a sealed instruction letter stored with the account.

He looked at me strangely.

“This box hasn’t been accessed in nineteen years.”

My mother gripped my hand.

The vault smelled like metal and dust.

Box 314 slid onto the private-room table.

I inserted the key.

Inside were three things.

A photograph.

A cassette tape.

And a ledger.

The photograph showed my father holding me when I was a baby.

I had never seen it.

For a moment, the room disappeared.

I touched his face.

My mother began crying beside me.

Then Luca opened the ledger.

Columns of numbers filled every page.

Companies.

Dates.

Account codes.

Amounts.

At first it looked meaningless.

Then Luca found names.

Bellini Imports.

Moretti Shipping.

Crown Development.

Aldo Properties.

Twenty years of hidden money.

My father had documented everything.

“This can destroy Carlo,” Luca said.

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

We looked at her.

“It can destroy more than Carlo.”

She opened to the back page.

There were initials beside several transfers.

Judges.

Police officials.

Union representatives.

Politicians.

Even two men who had once worked directly for Luca’s father.

Adrian had been right.

This went far beyond one family.

The cassette was labeled:

FOR HANNAH.

My hands shook.

The bank manager found an old player from storage.

We pressed play.

Static.

Then a man’s voice.

My father.

“Hannah, if you are hearing this, then I didn’t get to watch you grow up.”

I stopped breathing.

My mother covered her mouth.

His voice continued.

“I need you to know something before anything else. None of this was your mother’s fault.”

I looked at her.

She was sobbing.

“I chose to keep digging because I thought truth would protect us. I was wrong.”

The tape crackled.

“Carlo Bellini is dangerous. But he isn’t the person I’m most afraid of.”

Luca leaned forward.

My father continued.

“There is someone inside the Moretti family helping him.”

Teresa went still.

“Someone with access to every account.”

Luca whispered, “Who?”

The tape skipped.

Then my father’s voice returned.

“If Adrian ever finds this, tell him I’m sorry. He trusted the wrong brother.”

Luca’s face changed.

Adrian had two brothers.

Luca.

And Matteo.

The tape clicked off.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marco called.

Luca answered.

His expression darkened instantly.

“What?”

He looked at Teresa.

Then at me.

“Matteo Moretti landed at O’Hare forty minutes ago.”

Teresa whispered, “He never said he was coming.”

Luca’s voice hardened.

“He didn’t come to see us.”

Marco spoke through the phone again.

Luca slowly turned toward the bank vault.

“He went directly to Carlo Bellini’s house.”
