Chapter 4 - THE WARNING LUCA’S FATHER LEFT BEHIND

Carlo Moretti had been dead nine years.
Nobody in the greenhouse spoke while Luca read.
His father’s letter described negotiations from more than a decade earlier.
Antonio wanted a permanent alliance with Salvatore Bellini.
Carlo refused.
Not because the Morettis were morally superior.
Because Salvatore’s business model depended on stripping assets, loading companies with debt, then leaving other people responsible for the collapse.
Carlo wrote:
Antonio thinks partnership means sharing power. Salvatore thinks partnership means deciding who survives after the paperwork is signed.
Then came the important part.
The Moretti-Bellini merger currently being presented as a new idea had actually been drafted fourteen years earlier.
Carlo rejected it.
Teresa kept the documents.
Antonio never forgave either of them.
Matteo read over Luca’s shoulder.
“My father never told me.”
Luca looked at him.
“Apparently that is a family tradition.”
Fair.
The ledger contained recent payments.
Bellini Strategic to Dr. Harris.
Bellini Strategic to Julian Sarto’s consulting LLC.
Payments to a Moretti vehicle-maintenance supervisor.
A man named Gerard Pike.
Luca looked at security.
“Find him.”
Independent investigators did.
Not Moretti soldiers.
Gerard had left Chicago the morning after Teresa’s crash.
His bank account received $400,000 two days earlier.
The transfer originated from an entity controlled by Antonio.
The evidence now pointed strongly toward sabotage.
Then we opened the flash drive.
Board drafts.
Proxy plans.
Emails.
One file was labeled:
TRANSITION AFTER MARRIAGE.
Vanessa went pale when Rachel read it.
The plan assumed Luca and Vanessa would marry in six weeks.
Afterward:
Teresa declared permanently incapacitated.
Vanessa exercises Teresa’s voting block temporarily.
Merger passes.
Bellini Logistics absorbs selected Moretti assets.
Antonio becomes executive vice chairman.
Luca remains public chairman but loses operational control.
Within eighteen months, debt covenants allow a restructuring.
Luca removed.
The Moretti empire carved apart.
Luca stared at Vanessa.
“You knew.”
She looked at the floor.
“How much?”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
“I knew about the merger.”
“How much?”
“I knew your mother had to stop interfering.”
My stomach tightened.
“Stop interfering?”
Vanessa looked at me with open hatred.
“You have no idea what this family requires.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“But I understand what forged signatures mean.”
That silenced her.
Then Luca asked:
“Did you know about the brakes?”
“No.”
Immediate.
I watched her carefully.
She seemed terrified.
Not calculating.
“I swear I didn’t know.”
“Medication?”
She hesitated.
“Yes.”
The room changed.
Vanessa admitted she knew Dr. Harris had been asked to “stabilize” Teresa before the board process.
“Did you know he hadn’t examined her?”
“No.”
“Did you care?”
She looked away.
That was enough.
She had wanted Teresa quieter.
Easier.
Less credible.
Even if she did not order the crash.
Then Matteo opened a second ledger.
He went still.
“What?”
He turned it toward Luca.
Payments from Antonio to M.M. Holdings.
Matteo’s private company.
Almost two million dollars over eighteen months.
Luca stared at his cousin.
“You took money from him.”
Matteo’s face collapsed.
“Yes.”
“For what?”
He sat down.
“My gambling debts.”
That shocked even Vanessa.
Matteo continued.
“My father covered them.”
“In exchange for?”
“Information.”
Luca’s jaw hardened.
“What information?”
“Board schedules. Your travel. Your mother’s meetings.”
Then I understood.
“You told Antonio she was going to Judge Mercer.”
Matteo closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Mrs. Moretti looked at him.
Pain.
Not rage.
Worse.
Matteo whispered:
“I didn’t know he would touch the car.”
But his information had placed her on the road.
And before anyone could speak, investigators called.
Gerard Pike had been found.
May you like
Alive.
And ready to talk.
