Chapter 1 - THE BLACK DEVICE UNDER THE SUV

The first man to reach the SUV stopped so suddenly that the second nearly ran into him.
“Don’t touch it.”
Dominic Russo’s voice cut across the circular drive.
Rain from three nights earlier had dried, but the November morning remained gray and bitter. Alina stood inside the open front door with Mia pressed against her legs while Vincent’s security team spread out around the vehicle.
Frank Caruso remained near the staircase.
Too near, Alina noticed.
Vincent stood beside her.
He no longer looked delayed.
He looked hunted.
One guard lowered a telescoping inspection mirror beneath the SUV.
Another photographed the wheel wells.
Thirty seconds passed.
Then Dominic’s face changed.
“Boss.”
Vincent walked no closer.
“What?”
“There’s something attached near the fuel line.”
Alina’s hand tightened around Mia’s shoulder.
Frank swore under his breath.
“It could be a tracker.”
Dominic glanced at him.
“It could.”
The tone meant he did not believe that.
A bomb technician from Vincent’s private security company arrived twelve minutes later.
Nobody complained about the canceled downtown meeting.
Nobody mentioned the shipping consortium.
The technician worked in silence.
Finally, he stood.
“Not an explosive.”
The breath left Alina’s lungs.
Then he added:
“Not exactly.”
Vincent’s eyes sharpened.
“What is it?”
“Remote ignition device connected to an accelerant capsule.”
Alina did not understand.
Dominic did.
“Fire.”
The technician nodded.
“If activated after the vehicle reached speed, it could ignite beneath the rear compartment. Depending on traffic conditions, it might look like a mechanical fire.”
Frank’s face turned pale.
Vincent said nothing.
That silence frightened everyone more than anger would have.
Mia tugged Alina’s sweater.
“Black thing?”
Alina crouched.
“Yes, baby.”
Mia nodded solemnly.
“I told him.”
Vincent looked down at her.
“You did.”
Then he crouched again.
This time, he did not ask questions like a boss.
He spoke to her like a man who had just realized a three-year-old might have saved his life.
“Thank you, Mia.”
She considered him.
“You can have my truck.”
She ran back for the wooden toy and placed it into Vincent’s hand.
No one in the entrance hall knew what to do with that.
Vincent looked at the tiny wooden truck.
Then at her.
“I’ll keep it safe.”
Mia nodded.
“Don’t break it.”
“I won’t.”
Alina almost smiled.
Then Dominic approached.
“We need to identify who had garage access during the rainstorm.”
Frank stepped forward quickly.
“I can pull the logs.”
Vincent looked at him.
“You supervise them.”
“Yes.”
“Then Dominic will pull them.”
Frank’s mouth tightened.
For half a second.
Then disappeared.
“Of course.”
Vincent turned toward Alina.
“You and Mia are moving into the main house.”
Her stomach dropped.
“No.”
Every head turned.
Vincent’s expression barely changed.
“No?”
“I appreciate the concern, Mr. Marchetti, but I’m not moving my daughter into the center of whatever this is.”
“You already live on the estate.”
“In the staff building.”
“Which has less security.”
“That was acceptable yesterday.”
“Yesterday no one knew Mia saw the saboteur.”
Alina went still.
He was right.
She hated that.
Vincent continued.
“If the man noticed her at the window, she’s a witness.”
“She’s three.”
“Which makes her easier to frighten.”
Alina pulled Mia closer.
Vincent’s voice softened.
“I’m not asking you to trust my world.”
“What are you asking?”
“To let me protect the child who just protected me.”
That was harder to refuse.
Alina agreed to one night.
Only one.
Mia immediately asked whether the big house had pancakes.
Vincent looked at Dominic.
“Does it?”
Dominic blinked.
“I assume so.”
“You assume?”
“I don’t supervise pancakes.”
For the first time, Alina heard Vincent laugh.
Very quietly.
It lasted less than a second.
Then the security technician called Dominic back outside.
Something else had been found.
Not under the SUV.
Inside it.
A tiny camera hidden behind the rear cabin trim.
The device had recorded the interior for at least six weeks.
Vincent’s meetings.
Phone calls.
Routes.
Conversations.
And according to its storage history, someone had downloaded footage every night from inside the estate’s private network.
Dominic checked the access logs.
His face hardened.
“Boss.”
Vincent looked up.
“The downloads came from a staff apartment.”
Alina felt cold.
“Which one?”
Dominic looked directly at her.
May you like
“Yours.”
And suddenly the suspicion inside the house shifted toward the woman whose daughter had just saved Vincent Marchetti’s life.
