Chapter 6 - ELENA WHITMORE CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Federal witness protection sounded dramatic.

The truth was more bureaucratic.

Elena had entered a protected-cooperator program after providing evidence in a sealed federal investigation into freight corruption.

Not dead.

Not runaway.

Hidden.

Vanessa had spent eight years believing her mother abandoned her because William told her that was easier than admitting Elena had testified against people connected to his business.

Vanessa sat across from her father in Dominic’s attorney’s office.

I watched through glass.

She did not cry.

That seemed worse.

“You let me hate her.”

William looked tired.

“I kept you safe.”

“You let me think she chose someone else.”

“She chose protection.”

“For herself?”

“For you too.”

Vanessa laughed.

“I spent years trying to find a woman you knew was alive.”

William looked away.

Then she asked:

“Did you kill James Carter?”

His head snapped up.

“No.”

“Did you forge his maintenance log?”

“No.”

“Did you move money through M13?”

Silence.

There.

He looked at his attorney.

Then answered carefully.

“I handled payments.”

“For Victor?”

“Sometimes.”

“For someone else?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I can’t say without immunity.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“This is not a negotiation.”

William looked at him.

“Everything is a negotiation in your family.”

Fair.

Then federal agents arrived.

Not because Dominic called them.

Because Elena had.

She had been notified that old M13 accounts had reactivated.

Which meant the sealed investigation might be compromised.

Three hours later, Elena Whitmore walked into the building.

Vanessa stood.

Did not move.

Elena looked older.

Gray in her hair.

Same eyes.

Vanessa whispered:

“You’re alive.”

Elena cried immediately.

Vanessa did not.

Not yet.

I looked away.

Some reunions did not belong to spectators.

Later, Elena asked to speak with me.

Alone.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For your father.”

“Did you know he was going to die?”

“No.”

“Did you know he was threatened?”

“Yes.”

“By who?”

“I never proved it.”

“Who did you suspect?”

She looked toward the closed conference-room door.

“Victor Moretti.”

My pulse changed.

“Then why did Dad trust him?”

“Because James thought Victor was stealing from criminals, not killing whistleblowers.”

That was a sentence I never expected to hear about my father.

Elena continued.

Victor claimed M13 had been hijacked by someone inside the Moretti network.

He recruited James to trace it.

James found the money.

Then discovered the destination.

“What destination?”

A private investment company.

Whitmore Meridian Partners.

Vanessa’s family.

I felt cold.

“Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Your company?”

“My husband’s.”

William.

Vanessa’s father.

Elena nodded.

William had been moving M13 money into legitimate investments.

Why?

He claimed Victor instructed him.

Victor later denied it.

Anthony Moretti believed both men were hiding something.

Then James found a third layer.

The money did not stay at Whitmore Meridian.

It flowed outward.

To political donations.

Real-estate purchases.

Private debt.

And one entity:

CARTER INDUSTRIAL HOLDINGS.

My surname.

I stared.

“What is that?”

Elena watched me carefully.

“Your father’s company.”

“No.”

“He didn’t have a company.”

“Yes, he did.”

Apparently James created Carter Industrial Holdings three years before his death.

Privately.

No employees.

No office.

It held interests recovered from M13 transactions.

“How much?”

“At the time?”

Elena paused.

“About twelve million.”

I stopped breathing.

My father had been worth millions?

“No.”

She corrected.

“The company held assets worth twelve million. They were disputed.”

“Who inherited it?”

“You.”

My stomach dropped.

“Mom knows?”

“I don’t know.”

Then Elena said the strangest thing yet.

“But James did not create Carter Industrial for himself.”

“Then who?”

“He created it to hold something Victor could not put in a Moretti name.”

“What?”

She looked toward Dominic.

“An ownership interest in the Moretti estate.”

I stared.

“How much?”

May you like

Elena whispered:

“Eleven percent.”
