Chapter 12 - THE FATHER BEHIND THE WHITE DOOR

The key opened a small private ward beneath Hawthorne's main building.

Investigators had already discovered the entrance.

But several rooms remained locked.

Isabella's key matched a cabinet containing the ward's original patient registry.

Inside were records documenting years of confinement, altered identities, and questionable medical treatment.

One file belonged to Adrian Vale.

My father.

I stared at his photograph.

Silver hair.

Gray eyes.

A tired smile.

I had never met him.

Never heard his voice.

Never known whether he'd thought about me.

Now his life was reduced to pages inside a medical folder.

Dominic stood beside me.

“He looks like my father.”

I swallowed.

“He looks like you.”

Dominic nodded slowly.

Then an officer approached.

“We found him.”

My heart stopped.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

I covered my mouth.

The officer continued.

“He's in a separate residential building. Medical staff are assessing him now.”

I began crying.

Dominic placed a steadying hand on my shoulder.

“Rachel, do you want to see him?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

The hallway seemed endless.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Finally, we reached a quiet room.

An older man sat beside a window.

He wore a gray sweater.

His hands rested on his knees.

When the door opened, he looked up.

His eyes settled on me.

And suddenly, he began crying.

“Evelyn?”

My heart broke.

I shook my head gently.

“No.”

He stared.

I stepped closer.

“My name is Rachel.”

His lips trembled.

“Rachel?”

I nodded.

“Your daughter.”

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he held out his arms.

I walked into them.

And for the first time in twenty-nine years, my father hugged me.

He cried against my shoulder.

“My little girl.”

I couldn't stop crying.

“I found you.”

He pulled back.

“Evelyn?”

My throat tightened.

“Mom died four years ago.”

His face collapsed.

He covered his mouth.

For a long moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he whispered:

“She promised she'd come back.”

I held his hand.

“She tried.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Then he looked toward Dominic.

“Victor's son?”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes, Uncle Adrian.”

Adrian studied him.

Then whispered:

“You look like Isabella.”

Dominic's eyes filled with tears.

“She's alive.”

Adrian began crying again.

For the first time in decades, our family was coming back together.

But as investigators prepared to transport him to an independent hospital, Adrian gripped my wrist gently.

“Rachel.”

I looked at him.

“Yes?”

“There's something you need to know about Margaret.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“She didn't separate you children because she hated me.”

I stared.

“Then why?”

Adrian looked toward Dominic.

May you like

And whispered:

“Because she was trying to hide the person who really controlled the Vale family.”
