Chapter 10 - THE SISTER I NEVER KNEW EXISTED

Marcus Falcone had spent forty-eight years believing he was an only child.
Now Anthony Bellini was claiming Isabella Cross was his half sister.
The same Isabella who had lied about Elena.
The same woman connected to the disappearance of his newborn sons.
The same woman who had tried to gain control of the family fortune.
Marcus couldn't believe it.
"That doesn't make sense," he told Detective Morris.
"We haven't verified the claim."
"Then why would Anthony say it?"
"Possibly to complicate the investigation. Possibly because it's true."
Marcus looked toward the window.
His father, Antonio Falcone, had been powerful.
Demanding.
Private.
Marcus knew he had secrets.
But another child?
A daughter he'd never acknowledged?
The possibility unsettled him.
Over the following days, investigators obtained historical records.
A birth certificate.
Old correspondence.
Financial transfers.
And a photograph showing Antonio Falcone with a young woman named Catherine Cross.
Catherine was Leonard Cross's wife.
Isabella's mother.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Then read an old letter.
His father had written:
I will provide for the child, but the truth must remain private.
His hands trembled.
A privately arranged DNA test, conducted with appropriate consent and verified by an independent laboratory, eventually supported the family relationship.
Isabella Cross was his half sister.
Marcus sat alone for a long time.
He thought about Isabella.
Her carefully controlled smile.
Her expensive clothes.
Her desire to be accepted.
The way she sometimes seemed desperate for his approval.
Had she known?
Had she approached him because she wanted family?
Or because she wanted revenge?
The answer came during a recorded interview with investigators.
Isabella had been located and arrested while attempting to leave New York.
She initially denied involvement.
Then, confronted with financial records and witness statements, she began speaking.
"I spent my entire childhood watching Marcus live the life my mother said should have been mine."
Her voice trembled.
"His father gave him everything."
She looked down.
"And gave me a different name."
The investigator asked:
"Did you know Marcus was your brother?"
Isabella nodded.
"Since I was sixteen."
Marcus watched the interview later with his attorney.
His chest tightened.
All those years.
Isabella had known.
He hadn't.
The investigator continued.
"Why did you become involved with Anthony Bellini?"
Isabella laughed bitterly.
"Because he promised me justice."
"What kind of justice?"
"He said the Falcone fortune belonged to both of us."
Marcus stared at the screen.
Isabella continued.
"He told me Marcus would never share anything willingly."
The investigator asked:
"And the babies?"
Isabella's expression changed.
For the first time, genuine shame appeared.
"I never wanted them hurt."
The investigator leaned forward.
"Then why was one found near the trash?"
Isabella began crying.
"I told Dominic to move the child."
"Where?"
"To the nursery."
"And instead?"
She covered her face.
"He told me the baby had to disappear."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
The investigator continued.
"Did you object?"
Isabella whispered:
"Not enough."
Silence.
Then the investigator asked:
"Who ordered Dominic to abandon the baby?"
Isabella looked toward the camera.
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Anthony."
Marcus closed his eyes.
May you like
Then Isabella whispered one final sentence.
"And he ordered something worse for Elena. Something I tried to stop."
