Chapter 0 - The Smashed Cake

Crystal chandeliers illuminated the grand reception hall of Château de Montferrand with a golden light. Cascades of ivory peony arrangements surrounded the dais where an enormous wedding cake still stood, untouched just a few minutes prior.

Over three hundred guests raised their champagne flutes as a string quartet played softly.

Everything seemed perfect.

At least... until Élise lost complete control.

At twenty-eight, dressed in her sumptuous ivory wedding gown, she embodied the young bride everyone admired. For months, she had been telling anyone who would listen that this day would be the best day of her life.

But there was one person whose mere presence irritated her.

Camille.

A thirty-five-year-old woman, elegant in a long burgundy velvet dress, who quietly observed the reception from the edge of the room. She was not seeking attention. She politely greeted the guests, answered the château staff gently, and maintained the same almost disconcerting composure.

Élise had noticed that several staff members seemed to treat her with unusual respect.

She disliked this.

"Who is that woman?" she asked a waitress.

"Madame Camille..." the young employee timidly replied.

"Madame Camille who?"

The waitress hesitated.

"I... I don't know, madam."

Élise rolled her eyes.

"Another guest who thinks she's important."

A few minutes later, as desserts were being served, Camille approached a table to quietly thank an elderly lady who had traveled from Brittany.

As chance would have it, she passed right in front of Élise.

The latter noticed a slight smear of cream on Camille's sleeve.

She burst into a mocking laugh.

"That suits you perfectly."

Camille stopped.

"Excuse me?"

"You walk around here like you're part of the family."

Camille replied with a simple smile.

"I am happy that this day is beautiful for you."

This response, rather than calming the bride, stoked her anger even further.

"Are you looking down on me?"

Around them, several guests began turning their heads.

Julien, busy chatting with business partners, suddenly noticed the rising tension.

He tried to make his way to his wife.

Too late.

Élise grabbed a plate of berry cake sitting on a nearby table.

Silence fell.

Without the slightest hesitation, she hurled the plate directly into Camille's face.

The cake exploded against her cheek.

White cream slowly slid down her face.

Red berries shattered against her burgundy dress.

Pieces fell onto the ancient stones of the château.

The whispers stopped instantly.

All that could be heard was the clinking of a glass rolling slowly across the floor.

Camille did not move.

She remained standing perfectly straight.

Her hands remained folded in front of her.

Her gaze betrayed neither anger nor humiliation.

Only absolute calmness.

Élise, on the other hand, wore a satisfied smirk.

"You're nothing but a pathetic creature!"

A few guests cast their eyes downward.

No one dared to intervene.

Julien finally arrived behind his wife.

He grabbed her firmly by the shoulders before she could take another step.

"Élise!"

She tried to break free.

"Let go of me! This woman deserves—"

"That's enough!"

Julien's tone echoed throughout the hall.

Élise froze.

She had never heard her husband speak to her like that.

Julien pointed at Camille.

His voice trembled with rage.

"Stop right now!"

Every guest held their breath.

Then Julien uttered the phrase that would shatter the entire reception.

"She's my sister..."

All color drained from Élise's face.

Julien continued, without averting his eyes.

"And she is the true owner of this château."

An icy silence swept over the room.

No one dared breathe.

The waitstaff froze in place.

The musicians had stopped playing.

Even the children present watched the scene without understanding.

Élise felt her legs go weak.

She looked at Camille.

Then Julien.

Then the guests.

No one seemed surprised.

As if everyone already knew the truth.

Everyone...

Except her.

Camille gently raised a hand.

Without saying a word, she slowly wiped away the cream dripping down her cheek.

Her gaze remained calm.

Almost benevolent.

But in that absolute silence, her tranquility was far more imposing than any scream could ever be.

Élise then understood one thing.

She hadn't just humiliated a stranger.

She had just humiliated the woman who owned the château... and who had made this wedding possible.

And that was only the beginning.

The silence seemed endless.

Élise stared at Camille as if seeing a ghost.

"Th... that's not possible..."

Her voice trembled.

She looked at Julien, hoping he would smile and tell her it was all a bad joke.

But his expression was stern.

He had never looked so serious.

"You owe her an immediate apology," he said in a cold voice.

Élise slowly shook her head.

"You never told me about a sister..."

Julien lowered his eyes for a moment.

"Because she never wanted me to."

All the guests were now listening, not daring to move.

Camille calmly put down the napkin a waitress had just handed her.

Her burgundy dress was stained with cream and berries, but she seemed to pay it no mind.

She slowly approached Élise.

Without anger.

Without arrogance.

Simply with that quiet confidence possessed by those who have nothing to prove.

"You did not need to know my name to treat me with respect," she said softly.

These few words struck Élise far more violently than any slap ever could.

Her lips parted slightly.

No response came out.

Camille continued calmly:

"For years, I refused to appear in magazines or attend the events hosted here. I prefer to observe people when they think no one is watching."

She slowly swept her gaze across the room.

"It is the only way to know who they truly are."

A whisper rippled through the guests.

An elderly man quietly approached another guest.

"It really is her..."

"Yes... Madame Camille Laurent."

"She owns all of the family estates."

Élise overheard these whispers.

Her heart began to beat faster and faster.

She suddenly realized why the staff greeted Camille with such deep respect.

Why the maître d' came over to speak to her regularly.

Why the château manager had discreetly bowed to her earlier in the evening.

She had thought she was witnessing simple politeness.

In reality...

The entire staff answered to Camille.

Julien took a deep breath.

"This wedding could never have taken place without her."

Élise snapped her head up.

"What?"

Julien nodded.

"When we chose this château, it was fully booked for the next two years."

The guests began exchanging surprised looks.

"Camille canceled an international event so that we could get married here."

Élise felt the ground sway beneath her feet.

Julien continued:

"She refused to let me tell you."

"Why?" Élise whispered.

Camille answered herself.

"Because I wanted to be here as a sister."

She offered a faint smile.

"Not as an owner."

These words shattered the last of Élise's certainties.

For months, she had boasted to everyone that she alone had managed to pull off the region's most prestigious wedding.

She had bragged about securing the château through her own influence.

She understood now that it was all a lie.

An elderly lady gently approached Camille.

"Madame..."

Camille turned her head.

"Would you like us to ask security to clear the room?"

Every guest held their breath.

Élise grew pale.

Camille looked at the bride for a long moment.

Then she replied calmly:

"No."

This answer surprised everyone.

"It is her wedding."

A quiet wave of astonishment rippled through the room.

Camille continued:

"I refuse to let this day be ruined over a moment of anger."

Julien looked down, visibly moved.

Élise, for her part, could no longer understand anything.

After what she had just done...

Why was Camille remaining so calm?

Why wasn't she seeking revenge?

Camille looked at her one last time.

"Wealth brings power."

She paused briefly.

"But character reveals a person's true worth."

These words echoed throughout the hall.

Élise felt tears well up despite herself.

For the first time since the evening began...

She felt ashamed.

Not because everyone had seen her.

But because she had finally understood the difference between prestige...

...and true nobility of heart.

At that exact moment, the château manager quickly approached Camille.

His face, usually stoic, suddenly looked anxious.

He leaned in discreetly and whispered a few words into her ear.

May you like

Camille's smile vanished immediately.

She slowly raised her eyes toward the main entrance.
