Chapter 11 - WHY DOMINIC WANTED THE EMPIRE

Dominic’s confession was not complete.
People rarely hand over entire guilt in one sentence.
But it was enough to open everything.
Attorneys.
Investigators.
Financial records.
Medical records.
Vehicle maintenance.
The structure began falling apart.
Dominic’s motive was almost embarrassingly simple.
Resentment.
For fifteen years, he worked beside Maxwell.
Managed ports.
Settled disputes.
Handled political relationships.
Yet everyone called it Maxwell’s empire.
Dominic believed he had built half of it.
Maybe he had.
That still did not make it his.
After Maxwell’s father died, ownership passed overwhelmingly to Maxwell.
Dominic received money and authority.
Not control.
He wanted control.
The crash was supposed to solve that.
When Maxwell survived but appeared permanently paralyzed, Dominic changed strategy.
Temporary control could become permanent after enough time.
Cross helped because he owed Dominic money.
Celia helped for cash.
North Harbor absorbed diverted profits.
The medical system became another weapon.
Martha listened from Maxwell’s study while the independent attorney explained.
“He wasn’t trying to keep you alive out of compassion.”
Maxwell’s face hardened.
“He needed me alive long enough for clean succession.”
A dead Maxwell triggered trusts, audits, outside scrutiny.
An incapacitated Maxwell allowed gradual consolidation.
Cleaner.
More believable.
Martha felt sick.
Then the attorney continued.
“Your recovery threatened the entire plan.”
That was why medication increased when movement returned.
That was why Cross documented hallucinations.
That was why they planned transfer.
Maxwell looked toward his legs.
For fourteen months, he believed his body betrayed him.
It had not.
People had.
That distinction mattered.
Then came Celia.
She disappeared before investigators reached her home.
Her brother vanished too.
Martha’s old case suddenly became relevant.
Same brother.
Same manipulation of medication records.
He had developed a habit of turning healthcare systems into cover.
Two days later, both were located in Connecticut.
No dramatic chase.
Credit-card use.
Hotel camera.
Ordinary mistakes.
Martha’s licensing case was formally reopened.
The board issued preliminary findings:
Evidence strongly supported medication mislabeling by pharmacy staff and inadequate facility investigation.
Her original discipline might be vacated.
She read the letter in Maxwell’s garden.
He sat nearby doing leg exercises.
“So?”
“So what?”
“You’re getting your name back.”
“I never lost my name.”
He looked at her.
“Good answer.”
She smiled.
Then he tried to stand without telling her.
“Maxwell.”
“What?”
“Sit.”
“I can do it.”
“Not alone.”
“I’m improving.”
“You’re also reckless.”
“I survived a murder attempt.”
“That does not make you immune to falling into a hydrangea.”
He laughed.
Then sat.
The sound still surprised her.
He had become different over weeks.
Not softer exactly.
More visible.
Then Martha noticed something.
A man watching through the garden gates.
Not security.
Thin.
Baseball cap.
He disappeared when Owen approached.
Security reviewed footage.
Unknown.
Then Martha received a message on her phone.
No number.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED OUT OF ROURKE BUSINESS.
Her skin went cold.
Maxwell saw her face.
“What?”
She showed him.
His expression changed instantly.
“No.”
“What?”
“You leave the property.”
“I’m not running.”
“This is not a discussion.”
Martha stared at him.
“There he is.”
“Who?”
“The man who thinks ordering people is protection.”
His face tightened.
She continued.
“I will take precautions. I will cooperate with security. But you do not get to decide where I live.”
Silence.
Then Maxwell exhaled.
“You’re right.”
That surprised both of them.
Martha almost smiled.
“Say it again.”
“Don’t abuse the moment.”
Then Owen entered.
The unknown man had been identified.
Former dock employee.
Fired by Dominic six months earlier.
Why was he watching Martha?
Owen had found something in his car.
Photographs.
Not of Martha.
Of Maxwell.
Standing in therapy.
Someone outside the core group already knew Maxwell could walk.
May you like
And the photographs had been taken before the incapacity hearing.
Meaning Dominic may not have been the only person planning around Maxwell’s recovery.
