Chapter 8 - THE LAST LIE

The hospital was surrounded by police when Elena arrived.
Every entrance was monitored.
Every hallway was checked.
Yet someone had already reached the records department.
The original documents were missing.
Elena's father looked devastated.
“They're faster than us.”
Ruiz shook his head.
“Not necessarily.”
He handed Elena a sealed envelope.
“This was found inside the archive.”
She opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Her name was correct.
Daniel's name was correct.
But the child's name had been replaced.
The new name belonged to another family.
Elena stared at it.
“This is fraud.”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
Her father answered.
“To create confusion about the inheritance.”
Then the hospital administrator entered.
“There is something else.”
He placed an old ledger on the table.
“This was discovered behind a false wall.”
Elena opened it.
Every payment connected to the Howard trust was listed.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
And one final account.
The beneficiary was Richard Hale.
But underneath his name was another.
Eleanor Mitchell.
Elena looked up.
“Who is Eleanor?”
Her father went silent.
Ruiz noticed.
“You know her?”
Her father nodded.
“She was Richard's wife.”
Elena frowned.
“She died.”
“No.”
Another lie.
Eleanor was alive.
And she had been working inside the Howard organization for years.
“She was the person who altered the records,” her father said.
Elena felt the pieces finally connect.
Vanessa had been a pawn.
Daniel had been a frightened accomplice.
Richard was the strategist.
But Eleanor had been the person moving documents, changing records, and controlling the paper trail.
And Elena had trusted her.
Eleanor had been the family accountant.
The woman who always brought Elena tea.
The woman who had comforted her after arguments.
The woman who had repeatedly told her:
“Family protects family.”
Elena felt sick.
Then the hospital lights went out.
Emergency power came on.
A voice echoed through the hallway.
“Hello, Elena.”
Eleanor.
She stepped into the corridor.
No weapon.
No disguise.
Just a calm smile.
Ruiz raised his hand.
“Don't move.”
Eleanor smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
She looked at Elena.
“This isn't about stealing your money.”
“Then what is it?”
“Your child.”
Elena stepped backward.
Eleanor continued.
“The trust contains something worth far more than the money.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
She explained that the Howard empire had been built from stolen intellectual property and fraudulent patents.
If the evidence became public, the company could collapse.
But Elena's unborn child had legal rights to the original ownership structure.
The child could expose the entire system.
Richard wanted the child controlled.
Not harmed.
Controlled.
He wanted Elena discredited.
He wanted Daniel blamed.
He wanted the child raised under his influence.
Eleanor smiled.
“You were never supposed to find the vault.”
Elena looked at her.
“But I did.”
Eleanor's smile disappeared.
Elena held up the pendant.
“And I know where it is.”
Everyone froze.
Eleanor took one step forward.
“Where?”
Elena smiled.
“Exactly where my mother told me to look.”
Her father suddenly understood.
“The cemetery.”
Elena nodded.
But this time, she wasn't afraid.
Because she had finally realized something.
The people who had spent years manipulating her had one weakness.
They believed she was still the frightened girl they remembered.
She wasn't.
May you like
She had spent her entire adult life surviving their lies.
And now she was ready to end them.
