Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH ABOUT HER MOTHER

Rosie felt the hospital room disappear around her.
"Murdered?"
Michael nodded slowly.
Her mother, Catherine Hastings, had died when Rosie was nine.
The police said she'd lost control of her car on an icy road.
Rosie remembered standing beside the grave, holding Antonella's hand and wondering why the world kept taking people away from her.
Now Michael was telling her it hadn't been an accident.
"Who did it?" Rosie whispered.
Michael looked toward Lorenzo.
"Someone inside Vescari's financial network."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"Do you have proof?"
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
He reached into the bedside drawer and removed a flash drive.
"Your mother discovered irregularities in a charity account. She was an accountant. She didn't know the account was connected to organized crime."
Rosie stared.
"Mom was investigating them?"
"She was gathering evidence. She planned to report everything."
Michael swallowed.
"The night before she died, she called me. She said someone had been following her."
Rosie's eyes filled.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know the truth until years later."
He handed the drive to Agent Carter.
The files contained old transaction records, recorded telephone calls, and documents connecting the charity account to Carlo Vescari.
There were also records showing a payment to a mechanic who had tampered with Catherine's vehicle before the crash.
Rosie sat down.
Her entire childhood had been built around a lie.
The mother she'd lost.
The father she'd blamed.
The grandmother who carried too many secrets.
And the man standing beside her who was apparently her uncle.
Lorenzo approached.
"Rosie."
She looked up.
His expression softened.
"I'm sorry."
She shook her head.
"You didn't do this."
"No. But I wish I'd found your family sooner."
Rosie wiped her cheeks.
"Then help me make sure nobody else loses twenty years because men like Vescari think they can control everything."
Lorenzo nodded.
"I will."
Over the following weeks, federal investigators dismantled the financial network connected to Vescari.
Multiple arrests followed.
Accounts were frozen.
Witnesses came forward.
Dante cooperated fully, providing records that exposed the scheme.
Mateo admitted his role and agreed to testify about the threats against his sister.
Sofia was reunited with him under protective supervision.
Carlo Vescari faced charges connected to fraud, kidnapping, conspiracy, and the murders that had haunted both families for decades.
Rosie attended the court hearings beside Michael and Antonella.
It wasn't easy.
Some days she cried.
Some days she felt angry.
Some days she wanted to forget everything.
But she kept going.
One afternoon, after another exhausting hearing, Lorenzo approached her outside the courthouse.
"Rosie."
She turned.
"What?"
"I have something for you."
He handed her a small velvet box.
She stared.
"Lorenzo, if that's expensive jewelry, I'm giving it back."
He almost smiled.
"Open it."
Inside was an old silver medallion.
A tiny rose had been engraved on the front.
Rosie recognized it immediately.
Her mother had worn that necklace in every childhood photograph.
Rosie's breath caught.
"Where did you find this?"
Lorenzo looked toward Michael.
"Your father kept it safe."
Tears filled her eyes.
She opened the medallion.
Inside was a photograph.
Catherine holding baby Rosie.
Beneath it, engraved in tiny letters, were the words:
Be brave, little rose.
Rosie began crying.
But then she noticed something folded behind the photograph.
A tiny piece of paper.
She unfolded it.
Her mother's handwriting filled the page.
Rosalina, if you ever find this, remember that you were loved before you knew what love meant.
Rosie held the message against her heart.

And for the first time since she was nine, remembering her mother no longer felt only like losing her.
It also felt like finding her again.
