Chapter 10 - THE WEDDING THEY STILL THOUGHT WOULD HAPPEN

Sunday morning arrived bright and cold.

No rain.

No clouds.

Philadelphia had the nerve to look beautiful.

I wore the wedding dress again.

Cleaned.

Repaired.

I had asked Mrs. Vale not to burn it after all.

Not because I forgave what it represented.

Because I wanted to destroy its meaning myself.

The church filled with families who believed they were attending an alliance.

My father stood proudly near the altar.

Olindo waited in black.

Aunt Renata cried.

This time I understood why.

She was not happy.

She had been afraid for years.

I walked down the aisle alone.

My father tried to take my arm.

I stepped around him.

The room noticed.

Olindo’s smile tightened.

The priest began.

Latin.

Promises.

Obedience hidden beneath beautiful words.

Then came the moment for consent.

Olindo answered first.

“I do.”

The priest turned to me.

“Veronica?”

Silence.

Two hundred guests leaned forward.

My father whispered through his smile.

“Say it.”

I looked at him.

For twenty-two years, I had obeyed before understanding.

That ended with two words.

“I don’t.”

A sound moved through the church.

Olindo’s face changed.

My father stepped forward.

“Veronica.”

I raised one hand.

“No.”

Then the church doors opened.

Austo entered.

Not with an army.

Not with visible weapons.

With lawyers.

Federal investigators.

And Sofia.

My father stopped breathing.

My mother walked down the aisle alive.

Every lie in the room shattered at once.

Caterina followed.

Aunt Renata dropped into a pew.

Olindo turned toward Vittorio.

“What is this?”

Sofia answered.

“The end.”

My father tried to leave.

Investigators stopped him.

Not dramatically.

Just legally.

That humiliated him more.

I removed the heavy wedding necklace.

Placed it on the altar.

Then Sofia handed me the original Bellucci ledgers.

My father saw them.

His face collapsed.

Because he understood.

Everything he had spent decades hiding was now outside his control.

But one secret still remained.

Austo stepped toward Vittorio.

“Tell her about Matteo.”

My father looked at me.

Then at Austo.

And finally said the words neither of us expected.

“I did not kill him.”

Austo’s face hardened.

May you like

Vittorio continued.

“Your father did.”
