Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Evelyn Mercer opened the door herself.
Adrian had imagined this moment since childhood without knowing it.
He remembered her perfume.
Her laugh.
The way she used to touch his hair when he couldn’t sleep.
The woman standing before him was sixty-six now.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
Still beautiful.
Still unmistakably his mother.
“Adrian.”
He did not move.
Evelyn began crying.
“You’re alive,” he said.
“So are you.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“That seems popular in this family.”
Natalie stood several feet away.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Emily.”
“Natalie.”
“Of course.”
Evelyn stepped aside.
“Come in.”
The house contained files.
Maps.
Photographs.
Decades of surveillance.
Victor Mercer’s network mapped across entire walls.
Adrian stared.
“You’ve been hunting him.”
“Yes.”
“For twelve years?”
“For twenty.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel Vale died trying to expose what Victor built.”
Natalie looked at her.
“You knew my father.”
“I loved him.”
The room went silent.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“As what?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You already know.”
Adrian’s biological father.
Daniel Vale.
Natalie felt the strange weight of it again.
Evelyn continued.
“Daniel and I were together briefly before he married Claire.”
“Did he know about Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Why did Victor raise him?”
“Because when I told Victor the truth, he refused to let Daniel have him.”
Adrian laughed without humor.
“So every adult in my childhood agreed lying was the safest option.”
Evelyn flinched.
“Yes.”
He walked away.
Natalie followed.
“Give him time,” Evelyn said.
“He’s had thirty-nine years.”
Natalie looked back.
“Why did you need me?”
Evelyn’s expression sharpened.
“Because Daniel created something called the Vale Protocol.”
“What is it?”
“A dead-man disclosure system.”
Natalie frowned.
“If Victor’s network ever tried to eliminate Daniel’s surviving family, evidence would automatically release.”
“Then why hasn’t it?”
“Because Daniel disabled the automatic trigger to protect you.”
“So what activates it?”
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“Two biological descendants.”
Natalie went still.
“You mean us.”
“Yes.”
“You need our DNA?”
“And Daniel’s access phrase.”
Natalie thought of childhood.
Her father had loved puzzles.
Songs.
Books.
“What phrase?”
“We never found it.”
Adrian returned.
“What happens if we activate it?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Every encrypted file Daniel collected goes to federal prosecutors and major newspapers simultaneously.”
“That destroys Victor.”
“Yes.”
“And half the Mercer empire.”
“Yes.”
Adrian didn’t hesitate.
“Do it.”
Evelyn stared.
“Adrian—”
“Do it.”
Natalie looked at him.
“You’re sure?”
“I have spent my entire life protecting an empire built by a man who murdered my biological father.”
His eyes met hers.
“I’m done protecting it.”
Evelyn reached for a laptop.
Then the lights went out.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Adrian pulled Natalie behind a wall.
Evelyn grabbed a weapon.
“Victor.”
“How do you know?”
“Because there are only three people alive who know this house exists.”
A window shattered.
Security alarms screamed.
Then a voice came through the house speakers.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar to Adrian.
“Hello, son.”
Adrian’s face changed.
May you like
Victor Mercer was alive.
And he was standing outside.
